SMPlayer doesn't play youtube vids

I use minitube to play youtube videos. The problem is minitube crashes sometimes and also it doesn't provide you with the capability of downloading the vids from the tube. So I was looking for an alternative and found out about SMTube which is integrated with SMPlayer and works great. Downloading vids through SMTube is as simple as right click and "record video".

The issue I am experiencing is I can't play videos from YT using SMPlayer but have to resort to VLC player which is slightly slower on my intel atom and also mutes the sound if I skip forward or backward.
I went to the options of SMPlayer and updated the youtube code, tried all the output drivers in the video option, to no avail.

Do you know how to solve it? SMplayer/tube would be simply perfect if it used mplayer for video reproduction.
cheers

You could try youtube-dl to download videos. (http://rg3.github.com/youtube-dl/) It's in the repos.

Thank you so much for youtube-dl!! Incredible software!
I recently also found a substitute for Porpcorn-Time (doesn't work on Debian Wheezy) with peerflix - I've been streaming torrents via terminal..and now I also download yt vids via terminal -> I'm a true hacker now!! :P

In addition to youtube-dl, try minitube.

Thx Legimet! I've been using minitube for half a year now. great software! Had to compile it on debian but it is so easy that I had no problems. Just qmake and make and then install phonon-backend-vlc. The only downside is that I wasn't able to download the vids through minitube but now I just copy the link of the vid in minitube, open up the terminal and paste it after yt-dl and it gets downloaded super fast and smooth! great! :)

ViewTube (on top of GreaseMonkey) is another solution (for YouTube and other sites): http://isebaro.com/viewtube/

Viewtube is great to download videos, but now useless to stream. Youtube now adopt full html5.

It still makes more sense to use this userscript, because you can choose what video stream you want to watch exactly and not just the quality, and you don't have to run any non-free Javascript.

Thanks all of you for the answers! :)

I think I wasn't clear enough - the question is: why can't smplayer stream youtube vids (although I updated the youtube code to the latest 02/20/15 code)? If you take an url and paste it in VLC, it will play it. If you do the same using SMPlayer you get nothing.

On my slow atom SMPlayer is by far the fastest and best player, so I'd like to play 720p and even 1080p vids using smplayer..

I don't know about smplayer but how does mpv perform on your laptop? It's pretty light-weight as far as I can tell.
