Stuttering keyboard

A few days ago I installed your latest version and have been playing
with it ever since. I have noticed that there is a notable
delay between typing a string and it appearing on the screen. I also
notice that a character gets dropped once in a while. The delay is
such that I'm finding it hard to keep my enthusiasm up. Is there a
fix for this?

I am running on an Intel microprocessor-based PC. The problem did not
occur when I was using version 5.0_i686, which I acquired on
12/7/2011. It has never ocurred on any other GNU/Linux system I have
used.
