Telegram may have a free software client, but Telegram is not a free network. Their servers do not run free software. You cannot run a Telegram server.
I would not recommend it.

I agree with Jane, I would recommend XMPP for mobile group chat. It is not terrific but it works. I think Kontalk is the future if they ever implement file transfers and group chat.

We should prefer decentralized networks over centralized ones. That does not mean Telegram is non-free software.
