Testing Trisquel 8 : Feedback ;-)

With the third generation of Flidas ISOs having been released recently, and the establishment of its wonderful stability, now seems like a good time to start a Trisquel 8 feedback thread- idea courtesy of Mangy Dog and Pandya.

I can only personally comment on the second generation live CD, but it proved extremely stable and complete. The software selection appeared well-chosen, though the inclusion of both Rhythmbox and VLC was excessive in my opinion, and the complete lack of a mail client was slightly irritating.

Installation went smoothly- although a text installer would have been nice, as well as some way to assign partitions to LVM physical volumes (Ubuntu lacks that too though, so it's understandable). Post-installation, my only complaint was the lack of evolution in the repositories- every other piece of desired software was available, which was positively surprising given these are early days.

There's Icedove included. Now, on the latest iteration.

I installed April 5th - not sure which version that makes it.

I am generally happy with it. And like loldier, I found Icedove which I use without issues.

I sue the Cinnamon DE, and there seems to be a lack of functionality. E.g. the icons (and the app it seems) of language settings is missing, the power management icon is there but does not work etc.

But at this moment I see no reason the downgrade to 7 again

I installed Flidas in a virtual machine. The screen reader drives me crazy. It was the first thing to go.

Soothing space wallpaper calms me down.

Evolution may be included afterwards. After all, it is in Ubuntu 16.04's repository. Evolution may even be included in Trisquel 8's default install (like it is in Trisquel 7's).

Thank you! I do hope so- due to the fact that I am forced to use an e-mail server configured for only Satan's proprietary MAPI and EWS protocols, I have no choice but to choose between Evolution with evolution-ews/evolution-mapi, the third-party DavMail, and Thunderbird/Icedove with the proprietary ExQuilla.

For now, DavMail it will be then.

There's Sylpheed available in the repos.

I installed from the live image dated 10-April, having played with the January release for a while. I'm glad to see icedove, synaptic, pidgin, add/remove apps, and a few other things now included. I know that Orca screen reader bothers some, but I like it. I did update orca to the next version; hopefully, there'll be fewer hangs, especially when using the browser. One problem: I still cannot get my Think Penguin usb wifi dongle to work, though the system can detect it. An excerpt from the output of lsusb is below.

Any suggestions?

Exact same problem here. I unfortunately haven't found a solution yet, but installing the firmware helps- follow the instructions listed for Debian 7&8 at https://www.thinkpenguin.com/gnu-linux/penguin-wireless-n-usb-adapter-gnu-linux-tpe-n150usb-debian-firmware-install, perhaps just running the command "sudo modprobe ath9k_htc" and re-inserting the adapter instead of rebooting. That got the wi-fi adapter recognized for me, and (after a little while) added to the list of internet devices, but not able to find or connect to wi-fi networks. I'm not entirely sure why- the fact that it's listed as "ethernet" under ifconfig and the command iwconfig doesn't exist at all suggests there isn't any wi-fi functionality built in yet, but I'm not sure.

In any case, hopefully this is fixed quickly! ThinkPenguin devices are not at all uncommon, and it's a rather big hole in an otherwise incredible system.

Wifi functionality is included; I've another machine, with a pci wifi card, that works. Thanks for pointer to instructions.

Another query, my Flidas was installed close to the date of the original announcement in January. After running apt-get update and apt-get upgrade, can I assume I have equal to what I would get if I reinstalled using newer ISOs? It seemed I had read I could expect to ride this install right in to the official release. I hope that's the case. One reason I am asking is my synaptic package manager hasn't seemed to find any updates lately but running the two apt-get commands does.

So far Flidas has been very stable and very fast. I can't burn CDs or DVDs (Brasero can't see a fresh disk in the drive) and have issues installing that kind of software and my laptop seems unable to connect to a hidden network that doesn't provide dchp but can connect to my neighbors unprotected network, heh heh (I don't do that as I can use a cable like my desktop does and only tried it once as a test). The 'Software and Updates' program does nothing. I installed claws-mail via guix.

So I have a few issues but all in all, I really like Flidas with Mate.

Add 'apt-get autoremove'. If packages were removed from the default system, that command will remove them.

Your neighbors are good citizens. You could share a connection (both contributing to the cost). I also let my Wifi network opened to anybody. No password.

Third/fourth attempt: No GUI.
Please, fix.

Magic, Add 'apt-get autoremove'. OK, I did do that yesterday also. Tried again just now and says nothing left to do. Thanks.

Leaving wifi open? Eeks. I guess I'm paranoid. Mine isn't broadcasting and doesn't offer up IP addresses as additional measures to being encrypted. I'm not confident I can keep all the hosts inside my network secure if I let any old stranger on. There are web attacks using javascript that attack the home wifi router and if I leave it open then a user might inadvertently bring my router under attack. I think all my neighbors have their own anyway.

i installed with the net-install ISO yesterday - this got me a shell login but no X - is this expected behavior?

this is perhaps why stas730 is complaining about no GUI?

It is the expected behavior. The NetInstall gives a minimal system. You can then install any desktop environment on top of it.
