So what text editor do you use?

I use Emacs, it's great for editing text. The rcirc irc client is also great, combined with the spell checker (flyspell-mode) it is probably my most used program.

I use vi for system administration (since 1986) and GNU Emacs for
everything else (since 1991).

In X I use Leafpad usually and sometimes also gedit. Leafpad is faster, gedit is smarter. Off X I use nano for its simpliness.

I've tried emacs and vi and found both frightening. I'm sure they're great tools though.

I use vim for some things, emacs for others. For most configuration file editing, I use vim; for designing and updating my website, emacs. I used to use nano for what I use vim for now, but as soon as I bothered to learn how to use vim, I found it quite foolish to go back to nano. The other day, however, I edited my .emacs file with vim. It felt dirty.
