It looks like an increasing number of people lack social relationships. The loneliness is spilling over into virtual public spaces.
Unsurprisingly, it shows in the data: "Using the 2003–2020 American Time Use Survey, this study finds that, nationally, social isolation increased, social engagement with family, friends, and ‘others’ (roommates, neighbors, acquaintances, coworkers, clients, etc.) decreased, and companionship (shared leisure and recreation) decreased." Which probably correlates with the amount of people who spend most of their time looking at their own avatar on a shiny screen, immersed in a virtual world.
