Hi Everyone

Is there a way to search the forums? I didn't see an option for this or
with the mailman email archives.

I bet this question has been asked before.

I want to be able to play MP4 and MP4. What package do I install to get
totem to work?

I use VLC and Icedove and I am trying to move back to the default
packages Evolution and Totem so I have to figure this out.

Thanks

Are you using GNOME or Unity shells or MATE desktop? If so install both Evolution, Rhythmbox, Totem, which are both sound and videos apps written for GNOME.

You can search the forum with the text field and the search button in the upper-right corner of https://trisquel.info

Use https://trisquel.info/search/node if you want a dedicated page.

Don't you have the packages "gstreamer1.0-plugins-bad" and "gstreamer1.0-plugins-ugly" installed? One of them contains the codec you need. They are both installed by default on Trisquel 8 (Mini or not).

Install mpv (or gnome-mpv). That'll do the job better than Totem.

sudo apt install mpv

##EDIT##

I installed Totem but it crashes on my Trisquel 8.

Gnome-mpv works fine.

Thanks guys

So I have gnome-player and vlc installed and they are fine.

I was sure I loaded gstreamer bad and ugly(I am on mini and they were
not installed). However when I went back to check they weren't there, I
am not sure if i took them out by accident. I tried many things so maybe
another package took them out.

I am just about to do a full reinstall with Trisquel 8. Please don't
worry about this. If totem should be able to play MP3 and MP4, then I
will report back if it doesn't out of the box.

It's weird that we have totem but there is also gnome-Player as well and
that it sounds like Gnome-Player is better and is not installed on Gnome
by default...

Thanks again-Pat

Gnome-mplayer is a GUI for mplayer. Gnome-mpv is a GUI for mpv. Totem (Videos) is a "simple media player" on its own.
