Trisquel 6 Officially Out; yes- really this time!

Thought I'd start a new topic given the official announcement has been released. I'm surprised nobody else has mentioned it yet. It has been available for many hours now. I have not had a chance to try it. I know it isn't any different than the almost final ISOs I have been installing for people here plus some minor bug fixes.
There should also be an announcement coming in regards to the AR9271 chipset and the USB N adapters which will be available once that firmware release is official. I'm just waiting on a confirmation email that there actually is no further approval needed from Atheros for us to post the product to our catalog. This is actually coming at a very convenient time as we just ran out of stock in the US (actually we have a little left- although we will not sell them as we keep some stock for warranty repairs/replacements/etc). They are still available from our UK warehouse though. Not much stock there though either.

We have lots of stock of the newer USB N adapters. Although we don't yet have ones with external antennas available. They'll probably be coming once we have sold a few dozen of the basic AR9271 adapter.

It should be available very shortly. I'm waiting for Adrian to confirm its final version is actually been authorized for release. I think it needed a final OK even though it has been signed off by everybody at Atheros. If you found the code already OK. But it's possible it has been made available publicly in error.
Until I get confirmation I'm not going to list it. It will be available though before Trisquel has support for it “out of the box”. I do not want to release products which would jeopardize our internal policies of only releasing hardware that was free software friendly.
Just to be clear: the whole Trisquel project (including every image and every package in its repository) is "FSF approved". The FSF image, i.e. the image distributed by the FSF during the events it organizes, basically is the i18n image + a few applications, in particular for artistic creation (Audacity, Blender, Inkscape, etc.):

You misunderstood me. I meant TP as ThinkPenguin, not as Trisquel Project. You probably heard about the FSF hardware certification program (you can find more details here) and these wireless USB adapters will also fall under this category (although not officialy yet).

It will probably be a bit longer than I thought. There is more of a process than I realized. It *should pass* with flying colors though and they have been kept aware of the progress. I'm handing over some adapters tomorrow at the North East GNU/Linux Fest since John & Josh (from the FSF) will be there. ThinkPenguin will also have a table at the event.
I'm installing Trisquel 6.0 right now onto my USB stick :D

Installation on my personally built i5 Sandybridge machine went flawlessly as it has in the past. Nothing beats running free software on a computer I assembled with my own hands.
I decided to add XFCE 4.8 since I prefer it to Gnome.
I found that I had to upgrade from 4.0 (Taranis) from the command line (vi sources.list; apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade) as the upgrade manager wanted to upgrade from Awen to Taranis (?) However, happily downloading hundreds of packages now :)

UPDATE: Phoronix has published an article about this.
I see an ar9271.fw and an htc_9271.fw file in the /lib/firmware directory. I'm actually testing this first on an Ubuntu 12.04.2 machine to free the firmware.
I have a test N USB dongle from ThinkPenguin and after I made the drivers and replaced the two .fw files in /lib/firmware, I rebooted (to be safe I guess) and made sure the AR9271 device was plugged in.
The firmware has been working very well in Ubuntu 12.04.2 and the connection speeds have been the same if not a little peppier than the firmware that comes with Ubuntu. I'm running the 3.5 kernel from the lts-quantal so maybe that helps.

The Trisquel kernel will not load the free firmware. It is blacklisted. Yours is working because it is the non-free kernel. Though it would work the same once the blacklisting is removed on the free kernel. The driver code in the kernel is free already.
Guys, I'll try to prepare the new drivers for you ASAP, so the dongle can be properly tested within Trisquel 6.0. I'll inform you when I'm done (maybe tonight or tommorow).
What's the timeframe on when Trisquel 6 firmware package(s) are including these files and jxself updates the kernels to de-blacklist them?
You should know the answer already: "When it's done."

It took a little more time than I thought, but it's ready now. This is just a concept driver, but it should work out-of-the-box, no restart required. Just plug in the dongle, install the driver (see README for details), and wait a few seconds until the driver gets initialized.
Currently, I does not own any device based on this chip, but it's possible that I'll have one shortly. Until then, if you encounter any issue, let me know so I can fix it.

This will bring support for the 3.5 series kernel. I would like to have some feedback, so I know if it's working or not.
@Chris: I have some questions regarding the wireless USB dongle you mentioned:
- Will the dongle you send me be just borrowed, and will I need, after some time, to send it back? I ask this, because the postage costs me more than a brand new (supported) device, which are available from 6,32 € ($8.19) + postage in my country
- Is this device still categorized as a prototype, and will there be any differences with the final revision (technical or visual)?
- Where is the official place I can send a report if I encounter any issue with the device?
- Can you post here some photos + list the specs of the device (it would be the best if you create a page at WikiDevi, which is a site that list information about wireless devices)?

As for 1 it is yours. The dongles cost us less in quantity than shipping likely will. As for 2 this is the final version. No technical or visual changes will be made. We are still waiting on some proper packaging material with our logo on it. Nothing other than this of the physical device though. As for 3 just send me an email. The specs are an atheros AR9271 chipset. It is a 150mbps, with integrated antenna. It is small as you can see in the picture. I don't have specs readily available at the moment. We will have more info up in the near future. I have to talk to John @ the FSF on Saturday and I'll let you know more then (if I forget just ask me again).

How do you normally receive postal mail? It varies from country to country although if they don't delivery daily you may get a call. There isn't any signature required. It should take about a week in theory although customs, slow/inefficient postal/etc could mean anything from a slight delay (maybe it takes 14 days instead of 6-10 to never arrives or arrives a month and a half later). We are trying to get people to let us know when things get through and how long its taken. We would like to figure out the 'never arrives' from the 'arrives late/extremely late'.
Countries I know are a problem and have a decent idea as to the problems:
Italy: Theft / Corruption by postal workers.
Germany: Insane customs can delay severely (1+ month is not unusual).
Spain: slow- but only slightly. Delivery is fairly reliable.
India: If it gets stuck in customs it'll take a month or more; otherwise delivery is normal
Countries we never have a problem with:
England, Sweden, Netherlands, Norway, Australia, Canada, Ireland, Japan... amongst a number of others.
These are countries we ship to frequently so they are firmly implanted in my memory as being “not at all problematic”. Spain isn't really a problem either even though I put it in the bad list. It's really just more laissez faire attitude toward delivery. It gets delivered when it gets delivered. There are hundreds of countries we have probably delivered to.
Hopefully Alex puts the phone number on the customs form so you are/can be contacted by phone (if that is common in your country). He is taking care of the package to you as I'm away at a conference for the next 10 days (two events- the one libre planet the other is the north east linux fest). We have started making an effort to fill in more details as I think this may solve some issues with delivery. In fact I think if we can fill in additional info it may pass through customs faster. We have to automate the process though to really make that work.
Also try to get the new drivers/firmware into Debian unstable and also make contact with Canonical to get it into updated versions of their firmware. I'm guessing this would be for 13.04 but maybe 12.04 and above is a possibility?
P.S. I have one of your testing N adapters and it has been working fine. I assume that one should be fine as well or does it need to be replaced?

Debian won't include the firmware in its main repository or on the install CDs. It should go into a package with the carl9170 firmware eventually.
Not sure what your asking. There is no need to return it. Your testing has helped. These are not exactly exspensive parts. It's the entire time that it takes to get it right, support it, and other laborious work.
These are the builds available from March 08 2013. As a tester, who periodically tested the latest RCs (Release Candidates), I need to tell that I'm not overly happy about the state of these images, because they presented a new set of issues, not available in the previous RCs. Here are some of the issues that, in my opinion, should not appear in the final release:

isn't even relayed in the "blog" yet. I posted it to a few places, though.

The upgrade process has been temporarily disabled, so running sudo do-release-upgrade will say there's no new version.
This is because an issue was found with the updating process. It's being fixed but before upgrading your existing installation to Trisquel 6, please make sure to update your package manager and apply all available updates first.
Also, to prevent another problem, please disable multiarch if you don't need it - Edit /etc/dpkg/dpkg.cfg.f/multiarch and remove the line that says foreign-architecture i386 or justr delete the multiarch file. Then do the normal apt-get update and apply all available updates.

Does this warning only apply to people upgrading from an in-place

It's only for upgrades.
This sounds very similar to the issue I've got when upgraded to Brigantia. Although, I does not enabled multiarch by myself, the upgrade process went ahead and did that for me, and also installed a bunch of :i386 packages just to make me happy. When I removed these duplicate :i386 packages, the system refused to boot, and I fixed that by reinstalling the amd64 counterparts from the recovery environment (thanks god I was so wise to save the output from terminal to a log file, so I could analyze the problem).
Besides the upgrade problem, there are also other issues with the final release that should be fixed ASAP. If you're in contact with other developers, please let them know, so they can also be fixed. Thanks in advance.
Hello, I removed the multiarch file, did apt-get update, apt-get upgrade. Then I tried do-release-upgrade, but I could not get the upgrade to toutatis (trisquel 6.0). I saw this comment in Spanish: https://trisquel.info/en/forum/trisquel-55-insiste-en-que-no-se-ha-encontrado-ninguna-versi%C3%B3n-nueva#comment-31887. I think that it recommends to
1. change brigantia to toutatis in the /etc/apt/sources.list file (which could also be done from software-properties-gtk, A.K.A. Update Manager)
2. run apt-get update
3. run apt-get dist-upgrade
I don't know if this would work or if it's safe. What would I be missing if I do it like this? Is it advisable to do so?
Also, is there a way to upgrade from an ISO? I haven't found the answer
