Let me introduce myself to the forums. I'm the CEO of ThinkPenguin.com and as some of you probably know we sell computers, peripharls, and other accessories. Our entire product line up is free software compatible. That is our products don't require non-free drivers, firmware, or other non-free software. All our hardware generally speaking should work across distributions free and non-free.

We are interested in helping to spread the word about Trisquel and improve the appearance of the distribution. We will be marketing it more and more as time progresses. Currently we mainly support Ubuntu and ensure free software compatibility with our hardware. We figure users can order and/or move to Trisquel at a later time. Many of our customers are some of the least technical computer users.

What we are looking to do right now is get high quality case badges produced with the Trisquel logo. Before we can do that though I need to find out if there is enough demand or if we will have to wait. Our own demand is minimal at the moment even though we are working on changing that.

You can check out the attached Ubuntu case badge below to get an idea of what it would look like. This does not have the Trisquel logo on it of course. What you will see is it is a good looking high quality aluminium sticker.

Right now we would probably need about 100 - 150 people who would be willing to pre-order at least one or 15-20 people who would be willing to purchase a dozen for $12ish.

Here is what we need to find out:

1. Are you willing to commit in the next week or two to a pre-order?

2. What are you willing to pay? $2-$3 for one or two? For a dozen $12 is reasonable. For 100 $75. If you wanted a few hundred or a thousand the price can easily drop significantly.

There are a number of things that these can be used for to help promote Trisquel later. For instance giving them to people who donate to the Trisquel project or at user groups or festivals.

2. How many would you be interested in and what is the maximum price you would be willing to commit to for this quantity?

We need about $150 worth of commitments before we will start the process rolling. We would ask people to pre-order who are committing by email once we determine there is enough demand.

($150 is a very small amount compared to what we will be putting in)

You can send your commitments with the above questions to:

Hello Chris,

I'm interested in getting a laptop fully compatible with free software in the future without any hassle. However, I took a look at your website and came across this:
http://www.thinkpenguin.com/gnu-linux/warranty-returns
In particular,
Keyboards on desktops and laptops are limited to a US layout.
Unfortunately, I need an international keyboard on a laptop.
Of course, if you solve this issue I won't mind getting a few stickers with a new laptop in the future.

Personally, I couldn't care less about case badges, I removed all case badges from my machine.
I would be more interested in ThinkPenguin.com if there were posted more details about hardware because the information is somewhat vague; perhaps the most important are the battery life or cell number details on notebooks.

Most of our customers are not that technical and would not understand additional information. This is not to say we can't or won't provide it on request. If you have something specifically you think we should be adding please let me know.

In regards to the batteries you can purchase as many as you like.

You can find additional information for the Penguin Value and some
pictures here:

http://ixnotes.wordpress.com/2011/08/02/penguin-value-82011/

For the Penguin Air Pro:

http://ixnotes.wordpress.com/2011/08/23/penguin-air-pro-82211/

Here is more info regarding the laptop batteries (/w 3d acceleration enabled):

The Penguin Pearl gets about 4.5 hours under typical usage with a 6 cell Li-ion battery.

The Penguin Value gets about 4+ hours under typical usage with a Li-ion 6 cell battery.

The Penguin Air Pro gets about 3.5+ hours under typical usage with a 4 cell battery.

The Penguin Air gets around 2-3 hours under typical usage with a 4-Cell Li-ion battery.

You may be able to significantly exceed these with some tweaking. Power management is supported on all of them. Suspend to ram, etc. Something less common with many systems reliant on non-free graphics drivers. Of course those laptops don't work well with Trisquel anyway.

One more thing. In some cases we can get other keyboard layouts depending on the model even though we don't have a huge market for them. This depends on the laptop and language.

Hey Chris, really awesome you're thinking of increasing the visibility of Trisquel! As far as the badges go, I'd be willing to get a dozen for $12. I'll try and remember to check back here in the next week or two to see if you end up going ahead and putting an order in.

Unfortunately we didn't get much of a response. We put a low threshold on the numbers too. It doesn't mean it won't happen. It just won't be today. If we had people purchasing more Tirsquel laptops that would work too. Unfortunately we're not doing great in this area. We sell a lot of accessories though. We were interested in picking up another small company that focused on laptops which was doing better although they were asking more than we were prepared to spend. The funny thing is they weren't doing terribly well either. We'd have been a better fit for it as this is our core business. They also don't really know what they are doing although have done a good job getting noticed.

Where are they? The URL redirects to the main page, and I can't find
them in the shop either.

I hope to buy one of these computers, with Trisquel 5 installed. Would I get a Trsquel badge for doing that?

It just seems wrong to ship without a case badge. That is half the reason we have them now. So... any system that ships with Trisquel will ship with one now.

We do have powered by GNU/Linux case badges too. That might be preferable to some. I wouldn't recommend multiple case badges for a laptop/desktop computer. One looks awesome. Two or three not so much.

Great to see! I might buy a few badges separately, too.

It feels weird asking this, but could you get any laptops for a cheaper price? I'm only a student, and don't have much money.

I noticed you have video content that requires proprietary Flash. You could have an HTML5 player instead, with a fall back for old browsers. http://www.html5rocks.com/en/tutorials/video/basics/

The original page is very old. It use to work without Adobe Flash. We wanted to do HTML5 although no browsers supported HTML/or there wasn't a solution we could implement at the time. Even what we have while being a free flash video player it doesn't natively support GNASH.

We may be able to do a student discount. Email us with the configuration you are interested in. We try and keep them priced competitively although there are many factors. Some things we almost lose money on and others have a decent margin.
