Trisquel GNU/Linux-libre
This isn't a serious suggestion, but since Trisquel is based on the linux-libre kernel, maybe operating system should be called GNU/Linux-libre rather than GNU/Linux.
Mmm, I like your suggestion, it's a good advice we should let FSF know.
Happy hacking.

Anyway, GNU/Linux works well, there is no need to change that.
There are a lot of more important issues to think about.

At the end of the day all this (including linux and "open source"), if I am not wrong, has developed thanks to GNU philosophy, so...I also vote for GNU.

I like the idea of calling different from gnu/linux, but if we call
it just GNU we are making the same mistake as them: ignoring the
efforts of the other part.
IMHO, Trisquel GNU/Linux-libre would be right.

I agree with you, and I think calling Trisquel GNU/Linux-libre will mark
easily the difference with the 100% free distros and the non-free ones
so maybe many free distros will adopt the same name. :D

The system in generally called GNU/Linux in order to differentiate it from GNU systems that use different kernels. It also gives respect to the two parts of the system that can't really be done without. You can fairly easily have a system that uses only GNU software and Linux, the kernel, but you can't really do much without the other. The other kernels that you can use often don't support as wide a variety of hardware as Linux does, so most GNU systems also use Linux.
The idea of GNU/Linux-libre though I think is great. Because Linux-libre is a separate project from vanilla Linux and lets people know right away that it's a special version of the kernel that is made entirely of Free software.
I emailed rms about the idea and received the following answer:

It is better to call it "GNU/Linux", and likewise the non-free
distros, to help inform users that ALL these distros are variants of
the GNU/Linux system.
I Think GNU/Linux-libre its a great idea. now im gonna start say
"GNU/Linux-libre"

What Saint IGNUcius says is sacred so we should call this distros
GNU/Linux after all... :P

I disagree with his reasoning there. Calling it GNU/Linux-libre gives acknowledgement to both projects while also bringing attention to the fact that the typical Linux kernel is not libre.

I agree with Daemonax. It underlines the fact that there is a community willing to use a 100% free kernel, which might also encourage more people to contribute towards its development.
+1 Linux-libre clearly comes from linux (does not ignore its
origins), but is libre. and if that is *not* clear, whoever wants to
know will not need to ask too many questions to figure it out. with
absolute respect to rms --and with the understanding that this may not
be a serious discussion and certainly is not representative until it
is made explicitly so-- i think Trisquel GNU/Linux-libre, even if it
is a bit long, makes an important point.
