Unplug + Abibrowser + Youtube -> not working ?

Hi all,

I gave the latest Trisquel a try and installed it inside a Virtual Box machine.
Everything went smooth so far. I updated Trisquel 6.0 during install. Since Gnash under Youtube gave me a hard time before (freezing, dying with strange error messages, slow / stuttering in fullscreen) I wanted to try out the alternatives. I installed Unplug and visited a random video at Youtube. Unplug shows me the different types of Video quality but when I try to download it nothing happens. OK, not really "nothing" but after selecting the folder to store the video, the download didn't appear on my download list.

Then I installed DownThemAll and FlashGot to see if this solves the issue but this didn't help as well.

To my limited understanding there should be no external dependencies beside this, right ?

ViewTube on the other hand worked perfectly for me.

Does Unplug work for you ?

TIA,
Holger

Yes, I believe this is an Unplug bug. I either use "Open in a new tab" and then right-click the video and click "Save Video As" as a workaround, or use youtube-dl.

OK, thanks...I thought I am doing something completely wrong. ViewTube is ok in the end.

You can choose one of the options to "open" the video, and Abrowser will stream it if it's a WebM or h.264 file. Then you can save it almost instantly using File -> Save Page As. This is how I use UnPlug to watch videos.

The download option hasn't worked for me either so I always use the "copy link" option and paste it into the location bar. I haven't had any issues with that yet.

I use UnPlug together with DownThemAll. So instead of using the normal
downloads window, it now uses DTA to download. Is this what you tried?
Or did you try to use DTA by itself?

I used Unplug with the default Download method set to "Save as". No external tools were installed in the first place. Unplug shows me the various formats of the Youtube video, lets select me the video I want to save, shows up the Firefox save dialogue and after I confirmed saving the file in my download folder nothing happens.

When I set the download method to "auto", then FlashGot kicks in, downloads things but then the download is not listed in the ABrowsers Download list.

My expectation is that Unplug works without any additional tools installed. In the end for downloading Youtube stuff it should behave similar to youtube-dl which is a simple Python script and does not rely on any external tools.

I contacted the developer on this "issue".

I am aware that this is only an inconvinience but Unplug for ease of use should work as standalone addon in the first place.

This being said I like ViewTube a lot more because of the player integration into the browser for Youtube videos :)

It's a weird issue. Just a note, though: the latest version marked as "stable" on the Firefox addons site (and this is carried over to Abrowser's addons thing) is actually not the latest version; the latest version, 2.055, partly fixes the problem, though it still doesn't show the downloads window (you can see the download progress if you go to your Downloads folder and click on the incomplete file; you'll see its size increase until it's done). You can get the latest version here: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/unplug/versions/

onpon4,

thanks for pointing out...indeed, Version 2.055beta seems to provide some sort of fix related to a "save as" error.
