Upgrading from Trisquel 7 to 9 on a T400 with libreboot

Hello everyone.

My T400 with libreboot and Trisquel 7 has been lying in the basement for several years but now I started using it again.
I would like to upgrade to Trisquel 9 but I have no idea where to start. I made a USB flash drive with Trisquel 9 ISO but I haven't figured out how to boot from USB when I have libreboot. Is there a way to upgrade directly from the OS? Not sure where to start...

After reverting PPA's updates, with ppa-purge (in Trisquel's repository), I would try to first upgrade to Trisquel 8 and then to Trisquel 9, using each time 'sudo do-release-upgrade' or 'sudo do-release-upgrade -d'. Hopefully you will not face the same troubles as amenex: https://trisquel.info/forum/etiona-things-my-flidas-development-version

Hi, I tried ppa-purge like mentioned in the amenex thread, but I don't understand what the proper syntax is. This was suggested:

sudo ppa-purge ppa us.archive.trisquel.info/trisquel

and then you replied: "The Trisquel repository is not a PPA! Since you do not seem to know what a PPA is, I doubt you added any..."

I read the "How to add or Remove PP" article but don't get it.
What is the proper syntax I should use for the ppa-purge before I run "$ sudo sed -i 's/flidas/etiona/' /etc/apt/sources.list && sudo apt update && sudo apt full-upgrade" ?

Will this work from Trisquel 7?

Indeed, the Trisquel repository is not a PPA. See the link I gave amenex to explain what PPAs are and that contains an example of use of ppa-purge: https://www.tecmint.com/add-remove-purge-ppa-in-ubuntu/

Magic Banana referred to some of my upgrade-to-Trisquel_9 problems:

That was my experience using one of my three T420's that has a hybrid solid state rotating disk
hard drive. The solid state portion is meant to store code that rarely changes, while the
magnetic disk can be re-written many times. The solid state portion was refusing to forget
the bad stuff ... recently I moved that drive in its CDROM-drive caddy to another T420 in
which I had already installed Trisquel_9 successfully, and the boot-up process was _not_
disrupted by the hybrid drive as it had been with the original T420. That was a relief.

However, that portable drive presently has no operating system on it, as its intended use
is for moving valuable data between machines for additional processing. Moving an installed
Trisquel_x between computers is something that the Live DVD's and Live flash drives do quite
well, and doing so as a hack may not work out as one might intend ...

That said, Magic Banana is quite right to recommend getting the upgrade from Trisquel_7 to
Trisquel_8 done and working OK first, because that makes the next step a much cleaner process.

Hello janbaggerudlarsen,

I come here to find resolutions to Tisquel useage problems. The members have been quite helpful.

My first query regarding your question yielded a return for this site:

https://libreboot.org/docs/gnulinux/grub_boot_installer.html.

Down the page is a section on booting an installer on USB from libreboot. A possibly pertinent reference is this copied sentence - "For Debian-based distros (e.g., Trisquel, Devuan), there are typically menuentries listed in /isolinux/txt.cfg or /isolinux/gtk.cfg."

And then the instructions (prior and following). It would seem to indicate that the process can be completed.
I am unable to assist technically with the specific instructions.

Forgive me if I misunderstood your question. I hope this is useful.

Thank you Magic Banana and mr.r. I will first try upgrading with sudo and if that doesn't work I will try booting from USB.

I tried the USB boot solution but I can't even boot into the grub menu. It goes straight into Trisquel without showing the grub menu.
During boot I continuously tried hitting the space bar, Esc, C, ThinkVantage button but to no avail.

Then I put GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE=menu in /etc/default/grub and ran sudo update-grup but the menu still does not appear during boot.
So I am completely stuck.

Hello janbaggerudlarsen,

I found this "Reboot the Computer

Now that you have flashed the image, reboot the computer. Keep pressing < spacebar > right after you turn it on, until you see the GRUB menu, to prevent libreboot from automatically trying to load the operating system.
Here: https://libreboot.org/docs/gnulinux/grub_cbfs.html."

And I found this: https://libreboot.org/docs/gnulinux/index.html.

As I had mentioned, I am unable to assist technically with the specific instructions.

It appears Libreboot requires learning how to use it. There may be an easy, if inelegant solution. If it should come to that.
