usb modem?

I suppose these days modems for phone lines are obsolete. Do any modems exist that function via USB? If so, are there any that work with Trisquel?

TRENDnet makes GNU/Linux friendly modems, I used to have their TFM-560X 56k modem with TU-S9 serial to usb adapter and it worked fine with wvdialconf and then gnome-ppp. I imagine their newer direct usb modems would work fine too.
