I received a warning today:

"The volume "Filesystem root" has only 39.1 MB disk space remaining.
You can free up disk space by removing unused programs or files, or by moving files to another disk or partition."

I have 20GB allocated for my system files partition.

I used the Disk Usage Analyzer an noticed most of the space was taken up by log files, located in /var/log.

Kern.log and syslog are pretty big, each at 6.4 GB. Is this normal?

I've used a much smaller system directory before and didn't have this problem, and I would rather not have to remove any applications. Is there a setting that I may have missed? Or is there a way to reduce the size of these logs or another way to free up space?

No, that's not normal. You can delete the logs (they're there for your information only) but first you should see what's filling them up to help you avoid this in the future.

One thing that is filling the root partition are old kernels, you probably want to get rid of those as well. And the APT cache can get pretty large, can't remember whether it's enabled by default or not.

I deleted the logs, and everything is running fine. Thanks.

I also ran a software update. Will that take care of old kernels?

No, it won't. You can use the "Synaptic package manager" (for instance) to remove the older versions of the packages named "linux-image-*", "linux-image-extra-*", "linux-headers-*", "linux-tools-*", "linux-cloud-tools-*", etc.

OK. Great. I will give it a shot.

And the obvious 'sudo apt-get clean' to remove the .deb packages from /var/cache/apt/archives.

My dad also encountered something like this when he upgraded to Trisquel 7 (by using the option to upgrade to the new release). He ended up reverting back to Trisquel 6. Maybe the release upgrade is leaving behind stuff that shouldn't be there?
