When I go into add/remove applications in the menu and look for VPN clients to install, I get no results for either pptp or openvpn. However, if I start up synaptic, I can find and install them with no problem. I want to be certain that these clients conform to the libre initiative. Can anyone give me any feedback on this issue?

"Add/Remove applications" only show graphical applications. You can go ahead: every program in Trisquel's repositories is free software (if is is not, the Trisquel developers consider it as a critical bug, the highest priority).
