VPN connecting to server but no connection to Internet

I installed Openvpn and set up my vpn config file to a particular server. I can connect to the server, but I cannot connect to any webpages in Abrowser. Is there a firewall setting or another type of setting that is blocking the browser when I'm connected to the vpn?
Thanks

After more research, I found that Trisquel doesn't implement a firewall by default during installation. Using Synaptic, I installed GUFW. I'm still not sure why my VPN will connect, but blocks all requests (this happened before GUFW). It may require permissions or need to be set-up using terminal or the VPN may not support the kernel version. The research continues (that's part of the fun, right). Hopefully the firewall info will be helpful.

Netfilter is in the kernel. Gufw is a graphical interface to ufw, which manages that firewall, through iptables, shipped by both Trisquel and Trisquel Mini.

Yes. I didn't realize Netfilter was in the kernel.
I have skimmed though the F.A.Q and documentation but not intensively. I have Trisquel Mini on another low-powered machine and have made a few tweaks. I really enjoy both and think Trisquel is the best GNU/Linux distro.

I'm familiar with Gufw from another distro..
The VPN support walked me through setting up ufw with kill-switch through terminal (was having dns leaks) in a different distro, but it locked everything down too much.

I'm still pretty new to Linux and not a power terminal user. However, I enjoy the learning curve and appreciate this forum greatly.

I recently acquired a libreboot thinkpad X200s and couldn't be happier. True Freedom!

A trusted VPN that is not leaking dns is nice to have for daily use, but I know there are alternatives.

Thanks for your reply and helping a newbie along the journey.

So did you actually solved the problem?

I use ProtonVPN via OpenVPN. It gets connected, but cannot resolve any hosts. How did you configure the netfilter?

If I connect openvpn with servercfg by commandline, it works. Even does not leak DNS. But when I connect through the network manger icon - it says "VPN connected", but does not resolve websites.

I have not solved the problem. I have UFW set to default and have not listed any rules, as I'm not sure how to do so yet. My vpn has a tutorial to set up Wireguard using terminal and I hope to connect using that format. Mullvad offers a GUI for linux that I may try if I cannot manually set Wireguard. However, I'm not sure that the current kernel version in Trisquel is supported by Mullvad...

If anyone is using Mullvad and can verify that it works with this kernel version, please let me know.

Thanks.
