Hello,

Why vrms package is not there in the Trisquel repository? Is it because
Trisquel is a 100% free distro, so that vrms is not necessary ? Is it
because vrms won't work with Trisquel ?

Please help me to understand.

Thanks,
Jos Collin

VRMS only reads the licenses on files and does not check if the source
is available or if the software recommends non-free software. Probably
you can search the internet for more info about it.

Yes, I understand that. It checks if there is a copyright file under
/usr/share/doc. I think it is not practical to check if the source code is
available and if the software recommends non-free software. vrms can check
only if the installed software has a copyright file.

But vrms is a GNU/GPL.

I think it was removed because it was misleading. Are you the developed?
It might be a good idea that the developed change it or make a
complementary package that addresses all freedom issues and not only the
inclusion of a file with a license.

Perhaps VRMS could be improved to detect:
- - External (non-Trisquel) software repositories
- - Javascript/browser extensions (often installed in personal users
space w/op their knowledge)
- - Suspicious, common, knonw non-free software (Flash, Skype) that are
often installed manually
- - Occurrence of dpkg -i commands in history (often an indicator of
non-free manual installs)

Checking agains the FSF free software directory
http://directory.fsf.org/wiki/Main_Page may be another interesting option.

If contributed upstream/patched into VRMS, additional options to check
for 100% compliance would also bring attention to Trisquel from the
other distributions.
