Does anyone know much about WebP? I know it isn't a good format to use since Google is pretty much the only one supporting it. Does the file size go down but quality remain the same, are the WebP tools libre, and does it integrate into things like Image Viewer (eog)?

A core x264 developer did a comparison between WebP and other encoders at http://x264dev.multimedia.cx/archives/541. It's not too flattering. I don't see what this format has to offer versus PNG and JPG.
