Next thing we know, Microsoft substitutes the Windows NT kernel
with Linux. :-D

While that would be cool technology wise and to some degree security wise. But that would be yet another example of why the Linux kernel should have been moved over to GPLv3. On GPLv2 MS would still be able to ship it without allowing people to modify their local version.

If I recall correctly, Microsoft didn't adapt the Linux kernel. As far
as I have studied so far, they seem to have studied the base
specifications that allow file system mounting and program execution
(perhaps this has something to do with Unix and the Linux Standard
Base?), and nothing else. Leaving Canonical to provide the rest of the
packages from the non-[free/libre] system distribution called GNU+Linux
Ubuntu (including the GNU packages provided there).

Now, you're right when saying that we must still consider Windows 10 as
non-free, specially because it doesn't teach users about their essential
freedoms, see: (important

Microsoft released this to benefit Azure and not you.

Exactly. MS would rather make "open source" software in an effort to squeeze Oracle/Amazon/IBM our of the picture than to keep it proprietary and lose business.

This is a power play, nothing more.

Note Microsoft never say Free software or GNU as it would push the ethics, even when they ship big components of the system with the inclusion of GNU Bash.

This is a good thing in another sense, this shows MS are suffering enough to re-evaluate their distribution methods in order to play catch up and try to stop people from leaving, This is a sign of them losing
