As opposed to connecting directly to a modem; what's the perks of using a Router?

And if there are perks; what router is the best on today's market?

The best are the ones that run free software right? And, that are endorsed by the FSF on https://www.gnu.org/distros/free-distros.html like libreCMC.

The purpose of a router is to allow multiple computers to connect to one network. If you connect straight to the modem, only that one computer can use your Internet connection.

Many routers also offer additional firewalls, but considering the router software almost never gets updated (the way most users use them), this is a rather minor point.

Thank you, this was what I thought before I asked, but it's nice to get a kind of confirmation:)

Does anyone know about any router that is for sale/in production that comes with free software by default? And even better: if the hardware is "free hardware" as well?

There are no manufacturers that make routers with free software? Only old ones?

No one with 802.11ac?
