Which Video Card is the best choice today?
Hi guys,
I am looking for a PCI Express video card that runs with trisquel. 3D should work for some gaming. If possible it should be a card that only uses one slot, because my Gigabyte GA-G41M-ES2L has just 2 PCI-Slots that I want to use for WLAN and maybe a better sound card.
I have read a lot the last days and it seems that the older nvidia cards works best. Some information are a bit outdated, because there was a lot of development in the last kernel releases and massive improvements in the nouveau driver.
I watched the list on the nouveau website, but I am not really sure which card to pick, also the matrix on their site was last updated one year ago
https://nouveau.freedesktop.org/wiki/FeatureMatrix/
I also looked on the h-node site but I found this site a little bit strange. There are cards listed as 3D working and in the discription is mentioned 3D is not working.
Maybe someone here can give a hint what cards are working best with the latest kernel and fit on my board.
best regards
I think the best one is the one sold by Think Penguin:
But not good for gaming :/
If by "gaming" you mean modern proprietary games, sure. But if you're talking about libre games, I can't think of any that should have a problem with it.
Try GeForce 6xx series with mesa 12.xx.
For gaming, intel HD 3000-4000, and all before skylake. Or Nvidia kepler cards, with latest kernel and reclock, probably one Kepler card it is better choise. Personally I had gtx650, and now I have gtx770 4gb and gt740 (both gddr5), all working fine, like with blob.
Thanks for the information. I am not a hardcore gamer, but I thin the 9400 GS would be to slow.
The GT 740 looks good so far for me.
Do you run them with trisquel 7 vita_cell?
I never tested 9xxx or 8xxx series on GNU and Nouveau. I think the same, these GPUs are slow.
If you want to buy gt740, buy only with gddr5, I have Gigabyte one with 2gb of gddr5.
Do not buy "ti" versions, are different, not Kepler.
gtx750-gtx760-gtx770 must run fine too (not Ti).
Every Kepler you can run with GNU system you want, but install jxself's kernel, latest kernel is important.
Previously I played Counter-Strike GO with my gtx770, Mint and Nouveau. I still have gtx770, but I suing gt740, enough power for me, and no need for powerful PSU or extra wires for that GPU, less TDP and less heat, +it is smaller, easy for repair, change thermal paste, fan and heatsink/cooler.
Don't forget that before run any 3d game, you must to write reclock command into terminal, and after game play, reclock to the low pstate. So, it doens't clock and downclock automatically.
If you will not run Steam, so, yes, you can run this way on Trisquel without problem, any free software game.
Is there a documentation for the reclock thing? Can not find any information about such a command. Just now nvclock.
Yes, but it is hard to find sometimes, with kernel previous to 4.4 you must to add patches and compile nouveau.ko with headers, and after that booy with nouveau.pstate=1. But since kernel 4.4 you can reclock only with nouveau.pstate=1. Please, just do not do it, install Linux 4.5 or newer. Newer kernels no more need for nouveau.pstate=1. Everything work out of the box. After newer kernel installed, just "su" or "sudo su", and reclock gpu with command.

After exit a game, do not forget to downclock to idle.
For powerful GPUs, you must do stepping, from 0 to hightest one, do not jump from 0 to hightest one directly, so, reclock 1, later 2, 3, and the highest one, 4, every pstate is just reclock command to enter (this is just an example).
For idle, you can go directly from hightest one to 0.
For GPUs like gt740, you have only 2 pstates, will be quicker. So, pstate 0 (idle), and psate 1 (highest).
Note: every pstate marked as 07 (idle), 0f (hightest), powerful GPUs have more pstates. "AC" is actual pstate info that you GPU is already running.
If you Librebooted your computer, probably you would not be able to see GRUB.
How does the Iris 6200 work?
I never tryed an Iris (but I always wanted one laptop with i7-i5 and Iris GPU (pre-skylake)), if it is not Skylake Iris, it must to work very very good. Skylake needs blobs to work properly, and I think that Skylake it is less powerful that previous generation.
Iris gpu it is a very very good option (pre-Skylake), but don't expect that Iris GPU would work like gtx770 with blobs.
