Why the choice of Empathy over Pidgin?

I think it was mainly because Ubuntu also features Empathy, and we wanted the messaging client with better upstream support.

I have little experience with either application, but supposedly they are both very mature and similar in functionality.

It was an Ubuntu choice because of posibility of videoconference in some
protocols and/or other things.
