Why is EasyTag not in repos?
EasyTAG is a useful music tag editor you can get from the Ubuntu repos, but isn't in ours. Is there any reason for this? It's released under the GPL, so I don't know why it isn't supported.
I'm guessing because it is in the multiverse repository which includes free software that might not be legal to use due to patents. Easytag seems to fit the bill as it works with patent encumbered formats like AAC.
I just installed it from the repos by terminal. For whatever reason, I
couldn't get it graphically, but it is supported.
If it is the reason then it is not a valid one for Trisquel that already includes, in the default install, codecs to read these formats. Notice that, in the European Union (where Trisquel is based), software patents are (in theory at least) not legal.
And, indeed, EasyTAG is present in Trisquel's repositories: http://packages.trisquel.info/search?keywords=easytag
Magic Banana, notice that the easytag-aac package is missing in Trisquel as it is in Ubuntu's multiverse repository. The regular easytag package I assume does not support AAC files. Also this is not the only piece of free software in the multiverse repository which is not available in Trisquel (e.g. SMPlayer and Gecko Media Player are also not available in Trisquel 5.0 despite all being released under a free license). SMPlayer finally moved to the universe repository in Ubuntu 11.10.
