Why there still aren't free software friendly NASes?

I've never seen ever the posts explaining freedom issues on NAS, network-attached storages.
But are all NAS'es are unacceptable on freedom issues so not to be mentioned? Or we know little for these issues on NAS'es?

They're "just" small computers running software. You could implement such a thing with any computer running the right software. Nothing special here.
