YouTube Mobile without JavaScript

I disabled JS in Firefox, and I proceeded to load the mobile version of YT. The site loaded fine, and I clicked on a link to a video. In the video page, there was an option, below the thumbnail, to "Watch video". I clicked on that, and because it was an "rtsp" link, it needed to launch an external application. I chose VLC, and the link was shown in the playlist, but when I played it, nothing happened.

Does anyone know why this is the case, and what I could try to make the video play?

If you're going to use VLC, just copy and paste the normal YouTube URL into VLC (with Media->Open Location from clipboard, or Ctrl+V). That's the normal one that looks like "youtube.com/watch?v=xxxxx".

Or use youtube-dl.

Yeah, just as SuperTramp interjected: mpv is the right tool for the job.
