Hello, brand new to Trisquel, lifelong Windows user.

I click on the youtube video of my choice and click play, then it starts to load however it sits on "load" and never actually starts playing.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Hi! Flash is nonfree, so a lot of online videos have problems. Since gnash (the free flash alternative) is not adequate in my opinion, the best solution I have found is to go to the "plugins" menu on the firefox addons page and change "Shockwave Flash" to "never activate. This will cause a lot of sites will then recognize that you have no flash player and default to using HTML5, which will play much more nicely.

I also recommend getting the "greasemonkey" extension and then find the specific greasemonkey script called "viewtube". Then when you want to watch youtube, you can choose the new options both WebM and HTML5. A few youtube videos (such as VEVO videos) will still not load, but I'd estimate at least 95% should work now.

It's unfortunate that it's this much of a hassle, but once you have it set up it's not too bad.

I can't load Scriptish or Greasemonkey in my IceCat browser (the "free" version of Firefox). The weird thing is that Gnu page is the one that redirects me to "Firefox Addons" which aren't compatible with Icecat.

From my experience...

First of all,

The best thing to do, is to uninstall the gnash plug-in (that, most of the times, is too slow, or doesn't seem to work(?))...

And, then... For most YouTube videos, you can either:

- wait for the new HTML5 alternative to be loaded, automatically, once a flash player is not detected
- or (if you want good quality on your videos), install the VLC player plug-in for Abrowser, the "greasemonkey" extension for Abrowser, and the "Linterna Mágica" script for "greasemonkey", and wait for all of them to be loaded automatically, once you access a video's page on YouTube

(If the VLC plug-in doesn't load the first time, try refreshing the page in question...)

The Linterna Mágica script, using the VLC plug-in, will also work with most other video sharing web sites. And, it plays videos even better than the proprietary flash plug-in.

Other than ViewTube (Greasemonkey script), UnPlug (Abrowser/Firefox extension), and VLC (video player you can sometimes paste links into to stream), which are the best solutions to video problems, there's also the YouTube All HTML5 extension, which gives you YouTube's native HTML5 player on all videos (YouTube doesn't allow you to use it on videos with ads by default; this extension fixes that).

And yes, disable Gnash ("Shockwave Flash"). It's useless. YouTube is the only major place it works at all and (as you have noticed) it doesn't work there all that well now. (It does work, but only after you change the video resolution.) Many video streaming sites actually have HTML5 fallback players that they don't bother trying to use unless Flash is unavailable, so Gnash is in fact a burden for the most part. I honestly hope the next Trisquel release doesn't include it by default.

Well now, I have ran into new problems, Last night I installed Wine and Madori browser, however it must be noted I'm running the operating system from a USB, not sure the reason but when I booted it up this morning those things I installed are now gone.

Does this mean booting Trisquel from a USB stick launches the OS for the "first time" every time?

^and upon typing that sentence I noticed it also switched back to English US keyboard instead of UK which I selected last night.

It depends on how you installed Trisquel on your USB stick. It seems you installed it as "live-CD" so your stick will act like a actual CD.

You can create a USB stick which will act like a normal OS with "Starup Disk Creator" which you can find in the System Settings. Just be sure to check that you specify that you do want to save your data and settings on the stick and give them enough space.

I'll give it a bash, hopefully I can get over these teething issues as I like the look of it so far.

I used Ubuntu for a week or so back in 08 but didn't get into it. I still actually like Windows, I just wanted to try reeping benefits of something new.

EDIT: Found the startup disk maker, only gives me the option of erasing the "disk" it is installed on which is the one I'm running on right now, I figure it wouldn't go to well if it deleted the OS I am currently running.

Here is the relevant manual in Trisquel's documentation.

"YouTube ALL HTML5" is not mentioned. Would any user of this add-on write about it in the manual? Same thing about deactivating Gnash.

I added some text about the Youtube All HTML5 script, the Unplug plugin, and disabling Gnash Plugin to the manual page on viewing videos without Flash.

I would recommend Minitube. It's like a youtube "app" it is free software

Honestly, I've never gotten Minitube to work. Last time I tried it, when I tried to click "play", nothing happened. Especially confusing to me because I never hear anyone else say they have a problem.

I do not know what the issue is for you, but it works great for me. I think it may be a dependancy.
