[GFSD] Rename 'Windows Network' suitably.

Project:Trisquel
Version:7.0
Component:Programs
Category:bug report
Priority:critical
Assigned:Unassigned
Status:wrong
Description

'Network Servers' Icon in Trisquel Desktop opens up a 'Network' window which has a 'Windows Network' named Icon.

'Windows' is a registered trademark of Microsoft Corporation.
Using it as part of a free software name violates the Trademark policy of Microsft Corporation and also brings up an unnecessary naming conflict.

Please rename 'Windows Network' suitably, to disambiguate the context.

Incorrect - 'Microsoft Windows' is the registered trademark of Microsoft Corp. whereas 'Windows' is a common use word and cannot, therefore, be trademarked.

Hi leny,

Seems like you have not visited the 'Trademarks' sections of Microsoft Corporation.
Both 'Microsoft' and 'Windows' are NOW, *Trademarks* and *Intellectual Property* of Microsoft Corporation.

Here is a quick link [1].
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/legal/intellectualproperty/Trademarks/EN-US.aspx

Also see the attached screenshot [2].

They have even robbed us of an ordinary keyword.

Thanks! There must be some new treaty since my brain was last reset which allows such nonsense, plus formerly 'Windows' would have been an infringement of MIT's now defunct 'X Window' trademark.

However, if you look here:

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/legal/intellectualproperty/trademarks/usage/general.aspx

In the App use conditions you will see '(2) you’re using a Microsoft trademark (not including logos) to describe your app’s features or functionality without suggesting that the app is actually published by Microsoft.' Which AIUI makes the use of 'Windows Network' compatible with the GNU FSDG 'non-functional data' terms.

So sorry, still not a GNU FSDG issue.

[edit] corrected year reference to '...last reset' - call the previous a 'senior moment' :)
