Hello fellow Trisquel worshipers :)

After having fought with my Trisquel 4.0 (re)installation for DAYS I found a simple solution to my problem. It is related to the partitioning of the system. I am using an ATA WDC WD10EADS-22M2B0 harddisk and I...guess...the issue lies in it for some reason or another...

First the configuration which did not work:
earlier partitions - other OS, of no importance here
partition 6 - root, etx4 (10 GB)
partition 7 - swap (9.3 GB)
partition 8 - home, XFS (561 GB)

Now the quite similar (and now working) configuration:
earlier partitions - other OS, of no importance here
partition 6 - root, etx4 (10 GB)
partition 7 - swap (9.3 GB)
partition 8 - home, etx4 (561 GB)

With the later configuration I installed Taranis without problem and my dual boot system is now working fine.

I agree the problem must be lying in your disk, most likely damaged sectors :(

The only difference in those two setups that could trigger an IO error and hung the installer is that xfs and ext4 order the data in a different way, and I suppose using ext4 the damaged sector(s) are not used. If I'm right they will be needed eventually and produce errors.

This is all speculation on my side, but since you are the only one complaining we can be fairly sure the default partition schema works, and the problem is in your hardware. Having the output of the dmesg command from your system after an installation failure would help diagnose the problem.

Thank you for the quick reply!

Well...I have seen the installation screen one too many times already :-)

I will run some disk checks and see what comes up. Maybe it is just a ghost in the machine ;-)
