No audio with Dell Optiplex 380

Proxecto:Trisquel

Descrición

I turned my machine off normally then I turned it back on an hour later. When I went to watch a video, there was no audio. Trisquel couldn't seem to find my audio hardware because when I checked in the Sound menu, there was nothing under the "Hardware" tab. I went on to another OS and the sound worked on there so it can't be the hardware.

I'm changing this bug to "needs more info". Please at the very minimum provide us with which model soundcard is in your computer.

Lun, 01/09/2012 - 13:28

Will do. I am currently away from this machine. If it helps at all, the system's chipset is Intel G41 Express Chipset with ICH7.

And the kernel version is 2.6.38-13

Interesting. According to h-node (http://www.h-node.com/soundcards/view/en/121/N10-ICH-7-Family-High-Definition-Audio-Controller-) it should work. Was it working before and then it just stopped working? What happens if you try a Trisquel liveCD? It appears to use the intel HDA driver. You have that enabled in your kernel?

Sáb, 01/14/2012 - 07:22

I would also check these two pages on the alsa wiki on how to possibly debug your card (http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index.php/Help_To_Debug_Intel_HDA) and (http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index.php/Matrix:Module-hda-intel)

Sáb, 01/14/2012 - 23:15

Correct. It did. It works now. But when I turned it on this morning, the sound was not working and then suddenly kicked in. I'll try a LiveCD as well. How would I see if it is enabled or not in the kernel?

Sáb, 01/14/2012 - 23:16

I don't want to call it good since it kicked off again this morning either. Want to figure out this glitch and get it repaired :P

Dom, 01/15/2012 - 10:35

Sorry so wait is it working now? If it is working again then IMO I say give it 2 weeks. If nothing new happens we will close this bug. If it re-breaks we can always re-open the bug. This is because it is hard to diagnose a problem if the problem isn't happening.

Dom, 01/15/2012 - 14:55

It's happening right now unfortunately. Went to watch a video online and it's acting up. How do I check to see if it's enabled in my kernel?

Dom, 01/15/2012 - 18:21

What is the output of aplay -l ? If it is the missing module, check on lspci -v if it is snd-hda-intel. If so, type "sudo modprobe snd-hda-intel". It will only work for your session, to add it permanently add one line named "snd-hda-intel" to /etc/modules.

Lun, 01/16/2012 - 02:07

aplay -l:

**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: ALC269VB Analog [ALC269VB Analog]
Subdevices: 0/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

lspci -v (Sound only):

Subsystem: Dell Device 0400
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 43

Does this only happen when you're watching videos? If so, do you get audio from any other source when this happens? How are you watching videos?

Lun, 01/16/2012 - 19:53

I do not get audio period. I don't get an audio output and I can't use any input. The audio seems to kick in late from what I've been noticing with pattern recognition.

Sáb, 01/28/2012 - 21:46

So it seems that the process(es) or whatever loads the audio is delayed somehow. I've noticed that whenever this happens, the sound will eventually load. But I do not know when or what (may) trigger the hardware to run.

Dom, 07/29/2012 - 04:42

Wanted to bump this? Any luck? Have you tried Trisquel 5.5 with this computer?

Dom, 07/29/2012 - 20:38

I can't try it on 5.5 because my desktop has an error message with "?????" in it when the installer goes to the partition screen. My desktop got screwed up from upgrading it 5.5 :/

Lun, 07/30/2012 - 07:44

Was this an upgrade or clean install?

Mér, 08/01/2012 - 02:31

Upgrade

Mér, 08/01/2012 - 09:07

What about this? Try downloading 5.5 on a liveCD and then just try booting off the liveCD and see if there is the sound issue. You could go to youtube and play a video or something. I am just curious.

Mér, 08/01/2012 - 12:48

I'm on it! :)
