I am going to snail-mail a letter to Nvidious because I have one of their video cards (which I got before I became involved with free software) and I just wanted to run it by everyone before I send it out. I am not the best writer so I tried to keep it short and sweet. If anyone notices any grammar/spelling errors or anything I should change just let me know.

Dear Nvidia,

I am a GNU/Linux user and Free Software Foundation Member (#8999). I currently own an Nvidia GeForce 6600 GT which I run with a Nouveau free driver. Unfortunatly, at current this does not support 3d acceleration. I would love to have a video card that I can run without proprietary software that would also allow me to play free 3d games like Ryzom.
It would be wonderful if you would release drivers for your video cards under a free license such as the GNU GPL. Currently though I have had only problems and until free drivers are released for your cards I can no longer support your company or recommend to friends and family to purchase your hardware. The reason for this is that software freedom is more important to me then any game or 3d card. I hope your company will do the morally right thing and free their drivers for the benefit of all your users and customers.

I don't know how influential will be in their future decisions but I like
it.

Great job!

Yeah same, I don't know how much weight they will give it.  That is why I am going to snail-mail it.  I think paper letters are more effective then emails because I could easily send those in mass but if you actually take the time to print it out and put a stamp on an envelope I hope it might carry some more weight.

I think it's very well-written.

You've done a good thing. The more vocal the free software community is, the more likely manufacturers like NVidia will be to accommodate us.

Thanks. I've had a few ideas thrown out in the IRC chat room (mainly about rewording things and a few grammar fixes). One person said we should start an online petition but I on the other hand think we should all write them. People don't look at online petitions because anyone could write a script and add infinite entries to it. However, if users actually take the time to write letters and send it to their corporate office that lets them know we take the issue seriously enough to take the time to write about it AND mail it to them I think it has more impact. So if anyone else feels the way I do I urge them to write Nvidia

I would suggest to strike out the word morally because probably they do not
have the same point of view. The best is to call upon their own motivations
and values: money, market value, market presence, brand name, support from
activists, broader presence with libre distros, etc. I agree with you with
the moral value of free software and with the importance of presnting
freedom as essential but this should be presented as a personal position and
not universal one to have greater acceptance and make it eventually
universal. :-)

Hope this helps.

I disagree: I want to stand for these ethical opinions. Convincing somebody with them is (really) converting her to Free software. Forever.

I also disagree with your signature: Ubuntu is GNU. The many Ubunturos must understand that they are using the GNU operating system, fruit of these ethical opinions.
