trisquel-mini performances

Hello,

I'm a new trisquel user (installed it some months ago) and I use both trisquel and trisquel-mini (6.0.1) on different computers.
I noticed that my install of trisquel-mini on a relatively good computer (Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU 2.40GHz, 512 Mo of ram, Nvidia Ge force 2 MX200), was quite slow. So I tried to search on the web for informations about trisquel-mini and I found this comment on a trisquel test :

http://desktoplinuxreviews.com/trisquel-reviews/trisquel-6-0-lts/

"My installation of Trisquel Mini 6.0 to an EeePC 701 lasted less than 24 hours.

Why?

lxdm-binary was hammering the cpu & hogging resources, so nothing else could run properly, yet it could not be removed & replaced because of broken dependencies with the alernatives.

cpufreqd would run only at 100%, regardless of configuration.

The desktop was automatically covered with folders, regardless of configuration.

Too many useful & genuinely FLOSS applications are not available in the Trisquel repository: just how ‘free’ does FLOSS have to be before the Trisquel dictator accepts it?

Trisquel Mini is NOT light, it still uses a PAE kernel.

AFAIC, it’s a bug-ridden pile of garbage.

Failed: it doesn’t ‘just work'; & I take a ruthless approach to operating systems.

I’ll stick with MadBox 12.04, which is perhaps the ONLY genuinely light Ubuntu-based derivative available, & use the free repository."

I'm quite a noob in linux, so I decided to post here to see if someone could explain me that commentary.
Isn't there any way to obtain good performances with trisquel-mini as this guy seems to say ?

I see no reason to comment on the sort of dyspeptic bile which is
classically associated with lonely single men who have consumed too much
booze. I recommend you ignore it.

As to your performance problem - running which apps? There are many
which will put a strain on a 512Mb computer, regardless of clock
speed. The nVidia graphics probably won't be good enough for many 3d
apps etc.

I claerly felt this guy wasn't really objective, It's the reason why I post here.

You mean the apps I use could be the main problem ?

It's right that I sometimes use two or three apps at the same time : GNOME Mplayer for music and abrowser or midori for browsing for example. I also often use audacity. Now for example, with midori opened and a movie copying from my hard drive to a usb stick my cpu is 100% used all the time with half of my ram memory.
Should I run only one app at a time to have a good speed ? Can adding some ram fix the problem ?

Concerning my graphics card I renounced using 3D apps until I have no money for buying an intel one. I can't find any of my graphics cards, even the olders, on h-node.

Apps like Abrowser could be part of the problem with so little RAM.
But I'm afraid the movie to USB stick thing is actually GNU/Linux's
excellence - You can tie up almost any GNU/Linux machine with the
right amount of disk copy. I/O is so efficient it runs *fast* and
consumes noticeable resources.

But RAM yes the old trick with a computer for everyday rather than
games use was to favour spending on RAM over CPU speed - because RAM
was the most significant constraint. A 512Mb machine would fit with
the size of computers when that was the advice. So add as much as it
will take would be the plan for yours, it's relatively cheap.
Specialists like mrmemory.co.uk often know the right ram and max it
will take for a given machine (use their website to find out without
buying). Search Youtube for a video of how to
fit it, if that fails a blog/web search should turn something up.

The nVidia point was sometimes the free driver doesn't have proper GPU
clock control - with either newish or very old. So your nVidia GPU
could be running a lot slower than it can. However, I haven't checked
for your model and it's not a laggy screen all the time which would be
the symptom you've complained of.

After logging in, enter "top" in a console window. If it shows lxdm using most of the CPU time, the problem is in crypto of home directory. Workaround is to first login to a console session, than login to X session: i.e., from initial screen enter ctrl-alt-f1; enter username; enter password; enter alt-f7; enter username; enter password; then try "top" again, it should show negligible CPU usage.

Hope Trisquel 7 has this fixed.

If LXDM really was a problem, then it is solved with Trisquel Mini 7 that uses LightDM.

To understand the problem, you first need to take a look at the resource (CPU, RAM, network) usage when the system is slow. However, like leny2010, I am pretty sure you run out of RAM when viewing heavy Web pages. Your system then uses the hard disk as a complement. Accesses to the hard disk are something like 100 times slower than accesses to the RAM.

To sum up, and if your motherboard supports it, buy more RAM. 2 GB cost very little nowadays...

Regarding how packages end up in Trisquel, they mostly come from upstream which is ubuntu and debian.

See https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/how-trisquel-made

If you're willing and able to package and maintain some free program, you're probably welcome to do so.

The very lightest setup can be made starting from a minimal netinstall but you need to know what to install.

This issue has been reported by me over a year ago and it still persists in Trisquel 6 Mini. See this ticket: https://trisquel.info/en/issues/9493

I really hope it won't be an issue anymore with Trisquel 7.

//edit: BTW: The workaround is to restart the package "lxdm" every time you start your computer.

Trisquel Mini 7.0 uses LightDM not LXDM so it can't have the problem.

Thank you for the tip of restarting lxdm. I'll check this the next time I use this computer to see if the problem came from here, then buy some more ram and install trisquel mini 7.

@lembas : I'm not able to package any program. I have to practice a lot before.
