Apparently a few modifications that help privacy... that's nice.
But no security features (like a freaking ufw by default!)... Well, that was a nice try, it's good to see that they at least pay attention to what the users (some of them) say. Better than canonical xD

Any chance of next version being Debian based? That would be a huge step forward!

I am sticking with Debian, nothing new for me here anyway. =S

This iso have the new Qualcomm Atheros wireless firmware?

I'd assume the answer is yes...

But I'm about to test it now.

I'd also like to think users can dial-out now without having to add permissions... but I'm doubtful thats been fixed.

ath9k_htc was the bigger of the two issues as there are lots of users of wifi and very few of dial-up modems.

Is there a way to upgrade to 6.01, without reformatting, if I am using 6.0? Will that perhaps come as a regular system update, after this testing period?

Thanks for the upgrade, all involved :)

apt-get update and apt-get dist-upgrade, or using the GUI Update Manager
should give you all of the latest updates. I'm not yet sure if the
updates have actually been released yet though.

I have just installed the 6.0.1 beta on a spare machine. Like Debian modification releases (the digit after the second point) and as per Ruben's announcement it is just an update of the install CD to the latest maintenance levels. Perhaps including a few improvements that are yet to hit the repo. So apt on the machine in question points to toutatis.

Therefore there is no need to update, you're already at that level or will be automatically shortly.

However, it does need testing. So if you have a spare machine, some spare disk space on an existing machine or even have spare room to run a small virtual machine on your existing install - then please test, the more eyes the better.

hmmm

I just booted it. No new kernel and no firmware has been added.

Just realized the image Ruben is referring is not yet available!

Hold off on downloading...

The post on the mailing list post-dates the ISO image and he says on the list it's not quite done yet...

Hopefully my test confirmed that as the ath9k_htc firmware is not on the ISO. I'm also hoping to see the dial-up user added to the modem group... but doubt that is happening.

The firmware needed by the ath9k_htc kernel module is currently present but my understanding is that Ruben's intention is to have it in the final 6.0.1 ISO image, whenever that is.

Is this going to have the Quantal or Raring LTS enablement stack by default? No reason for normal ole Ubuntu to have all the fun. :-(

If you are reading this on the mailing list and not the forums, I meant the "LTS enablement" instead of "hardware enablement" stack.

Good work! Tested hastily with no issues so far @ AMD CPU & GPU based platform. Going to transform the dormitory laptop (first Intel Core gen. CPU + nVidia GT 330M GPU) into an Apache webserver fueling two domain names I own --yet to apt-get dist-upgrade.

So excited [to disobey the college codex]. (=

Hi,

So what currently is the story with Trisquel 6.0.1?

Can one upgrade from 6.0?

Is there much difference between 6.0 and 6.0.1?

Cheers,
Steve

6.0.1 is 6.0, but with all updates as of 25-August, 2013, and privacy bugs like the automatic use of a google dns fixed. I got it from devel.trisquel.info/makeiso/iso/

What's different about the isos that have "fsf" in the file name?

I believe those are the ones that are installed on FSF member cards. As for the actual difference, I forget exactly, I think it's just cosmetic stuff (like showing the FSF logo on bootup)

If this ISO is being released this late, it should at least have the LTS enablement stack with the lts-raring (3.8) kernel deblobbed, the raring xorg, and mesa like the recent Ubuntu 12.04 ISOs: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/LTSEnablementStack

More included apps, special FSF page on startup, and, maybe, different art work?

Hi again,

Thanks very much Dave. Good to know as I like to help out and test Trisquel any way I can.

Also according to Andrew above, one can still upgrade from 6.0 by typing the following into a terminal:

'apt-get update' and 'apt-get dist-upgrade'

Is this still true?

As far as I know FSF versions of the iso files are the isos given out at free software foundation events and sometimes at Windows 8 promotional events to guide people in the direction of freedom! :-)

Only difference is some extra software I think but I would go with the normal iso as I was unable to log in to the FSF iso when I tried it when 6.0 came out.

Hey again,

Okay after keying in 'apt-get update' followed by 'apt-get dist-upgrade' into a terminal, I get a message stating there are 0 upgrades available.

So I'm guessing the only option to upgrade to 6.0.1 is to do a fresh install?

Is there any official date set for release?

Cheers,
Steve

6.0.1 is mainly a maintenance update to the install CD. It isn't a
full new release so there isn't a new repo to upgrade to. Just
having a 6.0 system with current maintenance means you already have
nearly all of the changes in the current 6.0.1 beta CD.

In short when it is finally released it will mostly be a non-event as
far as existing 6.0 users are concerned as they'll already be there.
However, the updated CD does need _testing_, so download and install
it if you have the time. The more people test and report on it, the
faster it will be released.

I think the main problem with it currently is it needs a newer kernel (3.11 or 3.12 maybe?) as there is a lot of newer hardware which doesn't work and you can't simply install the older version and upgrade the kernel easily. The other issue last I checked is the firmware still isn't include in the 6.0.1 ISO.

I spent a little time trying to put together a new ISO (unofficial) and failed. Didn't realize there were significant differences that would prevent me from doing it compared to other distributions derived from Debian or Ubuntu. One of my techs attempted to do it as well. Also failed.

At some point we will find some more time to investigate Trisquel's changes although I'm hoping these two things will be updated soon. I'd still also like to see HPLIP and X (ie the later is part of the entailment stack) go into 6.

...

Yes- I haven't been around. Too much to do lately.

I'm *guessing* (albeit in an informed way), but I've read / seen
Rubén saying on the Internet somewhere he intended to make things
like a newer kernel and X available for Trisquel 6.0 delta releases.
I've also seen him say 6.0.1 delivers the Ubuntu 12.04.2
improvements, so we might see whatever kernel, X and Mesa were
backported as part of Ubuntu's 12.04.2 LTS HWE[1].

By extension I don't expect a 3.11/2.12 kernel in Trisquel until
Ubuntu ships one as part of the same LTS HWE series. If you want
one today, then jxself has shipped 3.12.0 in his repo this week.
Which IMO makes it plainly too new for Rubén's usual thinking on
bleeding edge code "It's the blood of the users."

The torrents on the http://devel.trisquel.info/makeiso/iso/ page don't work. The Transmission error message says: Tracker gave an error: "Requested download is not authorized for use with this tracker." I see that the torrent is set to use the normal Trisquel torrent tracker, http://trisquel.info:6969.

There are other BitTorrent trackers you can use to find peers. I'm using
these:

udp://tracker.publicbt.com:80/announce
udp://tracker.openbittorrent.com:80/announce
udp://tracker.istole.it:80
udp://open.demonii.com:1337

Most BitTorrent clients should let you manually add these trackers in.

Hey Everyone,

Found out Trisquel 6.0.1 is compatible with UEFI boot.

Chanced installing Trisquel 6.0 on a brand new laptop (Acer Aspire E1-570) and it refused to boot in UEFI mode but then I tried Trisquel 6.0.1 and it worked like a charm :-)

Hi antisnob,

It was a 64bit edition I installed (amd64) without the fsf software included.

Hi Dave_Hunt,

I'm just happy to help out any way I can. Not much difference between 6.0 and 6.0.1 but the installation runs much smoother. Delighted with the beta upgrade so far :-) The internal Atheros wireless card did not work initially but as soon as I upgraded to the newest Linux Libre kernal it worked straight away. The intel graphics card worked out of the box and I was able to use Gnome Shell and Ubuntu's unity desktop environment with ease. (Pity about ATI/AMD graphics cards *shakes fist*)

Anyway, highly recommend the upgrade!

Happy testing!
Steve

Really looking forward to future releases!

I probed 6.0.1 Live System 32bits and 64bits and 64 bits installed. Worked fine. However there are a mistake in Trisquel as it is claiming that it is 6.0 instead of 6.0.1 on:
* boot screen menu
* Loading up Trisquel.
* welcome on terminal onced logged in ()automatically in Live System.
* When the system is called for reboot or poweroff it claims to be 6.0 too.
edit: * Again, using HardInfo or Trisquel default it says it is 6.0 instead of 6.0.1.

Question, is there any table/documentation about Trisquel requirements, 32bits Live system, 64bits Live system, 32bits installed, Trisquel-mini, etc. TO sum up something, when the system loads up in Trisquel live system 32bits its memory consumption is 198MB while on 64bits 319MB.
We can roughly say that 64bits consumption will be 62% more than 32bits.

antiesnob

I've installed Trisquel 6.0.1 64bits; memory consumption is 299MB at startup.
Issues:
* "Windows and effects management" icon is missing if you change the theme to Adwaita.
* I set my keyboard to Spanish layout at installation but the truth is that the layout when I typed was in USA despite system settings saying it was on Spanish. After selecting USA it changed what it says to USA layout and keep writing that way. After that I chose back Spanish and a "distribution" appeared saying it was changed to latinoamerican (as I chose; distribution didn't appeared before doing that). Then the layout worked as expected.

edit: I've installed it on a GPT partition table with BIOS.
/bootgrub --> fat32
/boot --> btrfs
/ --> ext4
/swap --> SWAP
/home --> ext4
/opt --> ext4

At grubs splash screen there's an error "error: sparse file not allowed", after pressing a key the system boots up "normally" but it changed the default language to English and keyboard too and ask to rename folders in Spanish to English if you want to. I've searched for this bug and it is related to GRUB and having /boot on a BTRFS or ReiserFS. Here --> http://mirkolofio.wordpress.com/2011/05/20/error-sparse-file-not-allowed/ is a way to solved this. I'd like just to know if that really solves the problem or just prevents you from beeing prompted the error maybe because is not checking something, anyone know?
