how to install and set session of MATE,LXDE,XFCE?
This maybe a dumb question but I have just used trisquel, I am a mainly a debian user, since trisquel is based on ubuntu which is based on debian. I cannot find any tutorial on how to change the GNOME and set the session to MATE or ther desk env like XFCE or LXDE. I have installed the mate-desktop but I don't know how to change session to use the MATE instead of GNOME environment. And is it also possible to install lxde, xfce alongside with mate? I had a problem in fedora in which you cannot install all of them without interfering with another.
Trisquel's default display manager is LightDM and I have been using GDM for years. But, if I remember well, there is an icon next to your user name, after you click it at the graphical login screen. This icon allows to choose the graphical environment to start (assuming you have previously installed it with the package manager).
Xfce4 is the package to install for the Xfce Desktop.

MATE doesn't seem to work together with GNOME and Xfce in Trisquel. I can't even make it appear so that I can select it at the login screen box. Packages get broken if one tries to do that. GNOME seems to be added to the login wheel if one installs the package 'gdm'.

Lxde comes with Trisquel Mini and it is proposed if one uses Netinstall (the other choices are Trisquel Desktop and Triskel which is KDE). It behaves well without conflicts and can be added later 'sudo apt-get install lxde'.

As loldier & Magic Banana said just click on the Trisquel icon as you start a session.
Trisquel 7 mini has by default Trisquel mini + LXDE + Openbox as desktops environments and is perfectly fine with adding Xfce.
If you wish to have only one specific DE of your choice (those not proposed by Trisquel) , you can start a text mode install, install the base system, do your partitioning & then when comes to choose the DE you opt for Tasksel : At 'Select Software' choose Trisquel Console Enviroment , from there install what you need, as shown here

Yes, it could be called a Frugal Install it has the bare minimum (pcmanfm, lxpanel, lxsession, openbox , xscreensaver), Aptitude is in Trisquel mininal so you can add a Package Manager and lightdm or gdm, xdm..and after what fits your needs..
...and the package 'pulseaudio' is needed.
GNOME seems to be added to the login wheel if one installs the package 'gdm'.
I am certain I was using GNOME Shell with LightDM... although that may be back in Trisquel 6's times. Installing GDM enabled additional features: locking the screen and receiving notifications on the locked screen.
i have removed the mate-desktop package since it does not work. i tried to add the ppa but it says error, please check the ppa name*. i am currently installing the xfce4 but the xfce4-sessions is not installing properly, dpkg erro code 1 unmet depecdencies to 4.10.... i am currently doing a apt-get dist-upgrade, then going to try apt-get -f install after the dist upgrade
i have removed the mate-desktop package
Mate desktop package in Trisquel 7 repositary is not the entire desktop environment but a library with common API for various MATE modules
i tried to add the ppa but it says error, please check the ppa name*
The instructions here and it should work for you

Trisquel 8 MATE is in Alpha so the possibility is not yet given to users to do a distribution upgrade, ie 7 to 8.
that means still under testing with missing software libraries, can have bugs ect.
Another alternative is to install a very nice Mate respin version of Triquel 7 with a Mate DE

xfce4_4.10.1 is available in the Trisquel 7 repos (no need for a PPA) it's a Meta package.Make sure to add xfce4-indicator-pluggin that will enable Network-Manager in the panel.
What unmet dependecies ? try to re-install the dependencies you may have removed while removing various packages with your Synaptic package manager, you can fix broken packages too with Synaptic or aptitude
With Synaptic you can remove the ppa with error message via > Configurations > Repositaries , or install ppa-purge This program disables a PPA from your Software Sources and reverts your system back to the official Trisquel packages. You can use this to return your system to normal after testing a new version from a PPA.
I have installed XFCE4, but the WaveLAN in the xfce panel does not work. In debian I a m using the network-manager-gnome for xfce4 but it is already installed here in trisquel and still it does not appear in the add item to the panel. the xfce4-indicator-plugin is also installed.
