2-way realtime sync

2 laptops, one for use at home and one for use on the road. I'm thinking a client based utility that backs up the home laptop onto a NAS box and before leaving logging into road trip laptop and the changes copied down to that laptop. Also when coming home, the changes from the roadtrip laptop updating the NAS box, and then these changes applied to the home laptop.

Stinger is, both laptops are windows 10. I'm wondering if there is a real time 2 way sync windows client between two laptops via a NAS box that is GNU compliant

Freefilesync sounded ideal but there is doubt over is GNU licence claims - https://trisquel.info/en/forum/synchroniser-deux-dossiers-sans-faire-de-copie-inutile

Syncthing needs a client running on the NAS. I'm not sure if my Netgear Readynas can do.

I am using rsync and/or the Grsync GUI for this kind of tasks.

On Trisquel you can install Grsync from "Add/remove applications". It has a "Windows compatibility" option that may be useful for you.

It's been awhile since I saw a Windows machine, but I think I recall that you do all networking and syncing and so forth by just stretching a bit of string between two soup cans.

Did I write "awhile"?? Damnable autocorrect!! I meant to write, " a whale".

For a moment we thought you may have meant to write "a wail", as in "the eternal mournful plaint of the wailing WC user."

Had a look at Grsync, that one must have slipped under the radar - only one question is it real time sync?

You may want to look into things like lsyncd or incron. Both are available in the Trisquel repo.

https://github.com/lsyncd/lsyncd/blob/master/README.md
https://inotify.aiken.cz/?section=incron&page=about&lang=en

I just run Grsync or rsync to update files before switching to the other machine.

Have you looked at syncthing? I haven't tried it, but I know it is supposed to do what you are talking about.

And it's got a free software license. Which used to mean something on this forum, before we (apparently) entered our new enlightened age in which we cancel developers based on how frequently they send tweets/toots that we disagree with.

As a deep sea cephalopod, you must indeed be particularly troubled by whales: "The small sampling of giant squid stomachs have never contained any recognizable sperm whale parts, but many sperm whale stomachs have contained giant squid." -- https://ocean.si.edu/ocean-life/invertebrates/giant-squid-sucker.

That said, if you manage to collect yourself you will notice that syncthing was already mentioned in post #1 above.

Yes but since I think @amtrakuk is ultimately going to land on syncthing I wanted to take credit for it when this thread is marked Solved.

I did look at syncthing but my Netgear readynas no longer supports Apps as Netgear have pulled out of NAS storage
