Is it possible to access Outlook e-mail in freedom?

As far as I'm aware, there are two ways of accessing Outlook e-mail, and neither is free. The first is to download the e-mail using a local e-mail client, of which there aren't any free options, the reason being (I think) that Outlook uses a proprietary communications protocol. The second is by accessing Outlook via a web interface, which uses proprietary JS.

It is apparently possible to use a free local client (such as Icedove, by default in Trisquel 8): https://support.office.com/article/POP-IMAP-and-SMTP-settings-for-Outlook-com-d088b986-291d-42b8-9564-9c414e2aa040

Does Outlook also support IMAP and SMTP? If so Trojita is one of those free clients. Icedove is too bloated for low resources.

For Exchange Web Services you can use Evolution with the EWS plugin.
