As you might have noticed, we now have ads in the site. We made this
step to allow the project to grow in the future. We are also working to
provide donation methods and to open a online gift store.

We wanted to do this in a ethical way, so we will pick every add by
hand. If we make a mistake report it and we will remove the banner.

Here you have the complete policy:
http://trisquel.info/en/wiki/advertising-policy

Trisquel is a non-profit, community driven project. We need your help
to sustain our work, that's why we have a donation method and
advertising in our web site.

Ethical fundraising

We want every piece of our project to be ethically driven, especially
those regarding our funds. We have selected an advertising network
which allows us to manually approve every ad before it reaches our
page. This way we will avoid recommending unappropriate sites, like
non-free software web sites.

We reject as much as the 50% of every ad offered to our site, including
ads for:

* Non-free programs
* Hardware which requires non-free drivers
* Ads that require a Flash player
* Online gambling
* Pr0n
* Everything appearing to be a scam

We can be fooled, though. If an unappropriate ad skips our filter you
can report it in our contact page and we will remove it.

Excuse me but what exactly is so wrong with "Pr0n" that is on the same category with something as nasty as "Non-free programs" or "Ads that require a Flash player" ?

Well, nothing. But since Trisquel includes an educational project our
web is visited by young students, and they already see enough pr0n.

Humans in all cultures have expressed sexual modesty.
http://condor.depaul.edu/~mfiddler/hyphen/humunivers.htm

It's all well and good to question a culture's moral rules, but you seem
to be making the mistake of thinking that there is no answer to this
question.

There are plenty of good reasons to not have porn in the advertising,
and personally I'm happy that I won't end up having my limbic system
manipulated in such a way.

The fact that large amounts of people believe something, doesn't make it true, look at religion.
Now, I agree with quidam's rationale that it would be deeply corrosive for Trisquel's relations with educational adoption and use; I didn't consider this aspect.

Agreed. But sexual modesty does not come from religion, though every
religion I'm aware of has perverted basic human morality, which has
included the perversion of rules about sexual modesty.

Sexual modesty is simply part of being human, in rejecting religion we
don't have to reject the idea that sexual modesty can be a good thing.

The vast majority of men would not be able to get any work done if there
were naked women (or men) being advertised all over every website they
visited.

Having porn adverts on the Trisquel site would be tasteless and ruin a
very nice site and community.

There's a time and a place for porn, and it's not the Trisquel website.

What about AdBard? As far as I know, all of its ads are free software friendly, so you probably wouldn't have to check them all manually. The FSF gave them a shout-out a while ago, actually. http://www.fsf.org/news/ad-bard
