I would eventually like to move my clients off of Google Analytics and have been looking for free web analytics software. I have come across Open Web Analytics (http://www.openwebanalytics.com) and Piwik (http://www.piwik.org) but not sure which one is the best. Both are GPL software with source code readily available.

I'm sure there are some of you on this board that are using either one of these or both and have a preference. If there are others that blow these out of the water, that would be good to know as well. :-)

I believe webalizer is a good one.

I went on their website and Webalizer is not only ugly (looks right out of 1998 web design) but seems stagnant as the last release was in April of 2011. That is why I was leaning towards OWA or Piwick.

If I am going to be using this with a client, I really don't want them to feel stuck in a time machine.

Webalizer and AWStats are server traffic analysis tools (server logs). Google Analytics and the software you mentioned do more than that (Javascript + cookies). So you wouldn't want to use either of those for a Google Analytics-type replacement.

Yeah, I'm looking to host this on my server and link clients to this to show them stats like Google Analytics. I would prefer to use MongoDB instead of MySQL (which these use) so I wanted to settle on one of these before spending the time to modify their code to utilize MongoDB.

Oh and I promise to have the source code available and/or contribute back whenever I can. Want to keep Magic Banana off of my own personal magic banana if you know what I mean. :-)
