What would you like to change about it? Maybe people can make suggestions based on the features you're looking for.
I use a program called Synapse to launch applications. You might like it more than the start menu: http://www.noobslab.com/2012/02/install-synapse-on-ubuntulinux-mint.html

What exactly you don't like about the start menu ?
If it's the contents shown there, you might wanna try alacarte; if it's something like looks or speed that you mind, then you can use another panel like xfce4-panel or gnome-panel (not sure if it still works).
Synapse is grate if you don't mind typing a little, I too prefer Synapse.
