AMD graphic cards are NVIDIA?

Thinking about getting a GeForce GTX 760... it looks to be the newest one from NVIDIA that supports 3D acceleration and has free drivers. Should I go with that choice or AMD?

ATI cards don't support 3D without non-free software, full stop.

So, I guess that's out of the question. No gaming with free software on an AMD card then.

How come some of the AMD cards are listed on h-node as working with 3D acceleration?

Probably because whoever reported them actually had the non-free firmware installed. Notice that they were all tested with Debian.

Or perhaps people falsely believe they have hardware acceleration if they have a beefy CPU and the software acceleration is fast enough. (If so, obviously they didn't push the systems too hard.) The entries are incorrect as davidnotcoulthard stated.

Right, I forgot about that.

One of them actually was unambiguously this (some output showed that llvmpipe was being used, i.e. software rendering), so I corrected that one.

david is right - no ati will work properly. If you do some research I am pretty sure you will find an nvidia card that works pretty well (there are several on h-node but yes, there's no guarantee..); don't expect to use 100% of its power with noveau drivers though!

Some of them have near-comparable performance to the proprietary driver- as was reported by the real experts in this area (ie forget the guys name or his publication at the moment, but he reviews all the 3d graphics cards, sometimes with nouveau driver even).

Michael Larabel, the author of Phoronix?

He didn't test it on Trisquel, maybe the reclocking support may require proprietary firmware. Also, it is unlikely to be found in Trisquel 7.
