Backup problem

I am trying to use Duplpicity backup and have a problem. As background, I have HDD disk encryption and use a simple USB disk to backup my Home directory. There is a relatively small amount of data.

I just tried to verify the backup by clicking Display and received the enclosed error message. But if I click Restore on the Duplicity GUI, it shows all my recently backed up files. So I have not lost anything. But I need to preserve the data that I have. Duplicity seems like overkill for what I need.

I just copied my Home directory manually to the USB drive, but would prefer an automatic solution.

My major issue here is ensuring access to my files by technically illiterate family members in the event of my incapacitation. A bigger issue is the sudden failure of my ancient HDD.

Thanks!

For alternatives you can look at https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/backup-files-quickly-and-easily
There are Back In Time (with GUI) and rsync (for command-line).
Both are pre-installed on Trisquel

Why not using Back In Time? Trisquel ships it by default. With Back In Time, the backup is directly readable. In contrast, you need Duplicity to read a backup made with it. There are advantages to that second approach though: compressed incremental updates, encryption and signing, etc. Do they matter to you? Notice that you can configure Back In Time so that the backup is launched as soon as you plug your USB disk. That is what I do.

If you really want to stick to Duplicity, you may want Déjà Dup. The package in Trisquel's repository is named deja-dup. Déjà Dup uses Duplicity, but not in all its complexity. If you use the Nautilus file manager (at least; does anybody here knows if it works with Caja?), it is integrated to it.

"This package provides a contextual menu in the Caja file manager to backup and restore your files:"
https://packages.trisquel.org/aramo/deja-dup-caja

But Back In Time may indeed be more flexible for a routine backup of personal files.

Thanks Magic Banana & Knife. I will try Back In Time.
Correction- I just tried it and my USB drive does not show up. Also, configuration looks pretty complex.I was hoping for something more intuitive.

I think it could be in /media/username under "Computer".

Are you following https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/backup-files-quickly-and-easily that knife has already given? The feature I wrote about (to backup as soon as you plug your USB disk) is in the drop-down menu below "Schedule" in the second screenshot.

Thanks Prospero.

The GUI is so small that I needed my magnifying visor normally used for soldering small components! (My computer is an X200 Thinkpad.} I finally got Back In Time running and it started throwing off error messages so fast I couldn't read them. It finally seems to have stabilized and is running now. We'll see if it works...

Hi IBM1130,

I am no tech head, but have been using BackInTime for a while now and found it to be a life saver.

It's excellent, specially when it comes to restore your backups. I think your family members will be glad to learn to use it too.
