When I installed Trisquel for the first time yesterday I had an issue: First I installed Linux Mint and then Trisquel, but I couldn't log in to Trisquel. When entering my password I was returned to the empty log in dialog. I tried to enter a wrong password on purpose and this was rightfully recognised as wrong.

I solved this by wipe the hdd and reinstall both in the opposit order: Trisquel first then Mint

Today I had the same issue right after I started and aborted restoring my back up from an earlier install.

Is this something that you experience every now and then?

Is there a solution to it?

Do you run graphical apps with sudo?

In the first case I think actually could log in (so I forgot). As I remember, after log in I updated the software and rebooted. But I'm pretty sure that I didn't run anything from terminal though.

In the second case had just aborted grsync which I do run from terminal. So yes, i the latter case

If you use gksudo instead of sudo with graphical apps, you avoid this problem.

I didn't (and still don't 100%) know of this difference. But it seems to explain issues that I have encountered earlier (with other distros).

I've found pages explaining this deeper and will study them soon.

Can you explain the diffence in easy understandable terms?

'gksu' is a GTK+ frontend for 'sudo', which allows you to execute command as another user (root usually). I have never had any issue myself but some people say you must use 'gksu' for programs with graphical interfaces and 'sudo' otherwise.

I've often used sudo on several distributions without problems. But I'll dig in to it, thanks

Can you log in the terminal you get by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1 at the login screen?

To come back to the graphical session, press Alt+F7.

Why did you reinstall Mint? was it working prior to the Trisquel install?

I installed both sharing /home. Prior to the (second) incident of the problem I had just aborted (midway) restoring the backup of my earlier setup.

Before installing Trisquel I did a backup of /home and wiped the hdd. After installing I wanted to restore the backup, but midway I figured that I might run into trouble, espacially with folders of certain applications. I realised that I should only restore/copy the content of the basic folders such as Documents, Downloads etc.

Anyway, the reason to reinstall Mint was, that I wanted to starts from scratch, Trisquel being my main OS.

You can have two systems sharing a same /home as long as you are OK with having the same configuration for the applications in common.

So far that's one of my aims. I'm not sure if I'll regret it later though...?

I would like to mention that I ran into a similar problem when my Debian installation ran out of space. So check if that is the case by following Magic Banana's instructions, then run the following:
df -h will display all the partitions and how much free space you have

Lots of space

As I don't have this problem anymore I can't really try your suggestions.

I would like to know though if this is a known issue? Can expect this to happen again?
