Desktop - too long file names not showing - where is setting to show full name with cursor hover

Question would ask 'Is there a setting'....?

Also, in caja, the condition shows with icon view, but in compact view with the preference box "All columns have the same width" unchecked, the full names of directories and other files is displayed.

On the Desktop, a 'right click' causes the full name of the file to be displayed, but also launches the actions menu.

This was not an issue for me until now when I began creating multiple files with the same and more descriptive name, but with the version indicator at the end. They all look the same.

Not sure whether it would be convenient in your case but you could try something similar to the YYYYMMDD-* file name format, replacing the date indicator with your version indicator. That way they would show up with version number visible and in ascending (or descending) order, followed by the beginning of their descriptive name.

Complete file names are shown when using zone selection (i.e. left clicking in the background and dragging the cursor over icons).

I tried the 'zone selection' and that does reveal the full file name without launching an app to act on the file.
I also found that right clicking over the icon, maintaining the hold on the right mouse button, and dragging the cursor off of the icon results in the action menu disappearing rather than remaining open, as it does if you release the right mouse button while still over the icon. This does leave the full file name revealed and highlighted.

I may be falsely remembering that some desktop(s) I have used in the past did reveal the full file name when the cursor was hovered over the icon.
It would be more convenient for me, and quicker to just pass over an icon and have the full file name revealed without having to click.

Would it not be like gaining 'focus' when the cursor hovers over an open window?

To the permanently open terminal with the Desktop directory 'ls'ed?

I thing the "drawing a rectangle..." is what lutes referred to as "zone selection." The couple of inconveniences are that if you select multiple icons, the icon image of one icon can cover the otherwise now revealed text of another. And, if the icon text is behind an open window, it will not raise, even though the icon image is not covered by the open window.

Btw, 'Ctrl+A' does not seem to do anything on my desktop, although I am not sure how to implement it.

Wish list: Hovering the cursor over a desktop icon gives focus, (temporarily) raises the icon and reveals the whole name. Moving off of icon allows it to un-raise to behind any open windows.

I went into dconf and increased the number of lines allowed for the desktop icons from 3 up to 6. More clutter, but I still have acreage to work with on this desktop.

I can not see an obvious (easy) way to increase the width of the text dialog area of the icon.
The text area is 'overly' narrow compared with the overall width of the icon. It would be nice to be able to increase it to at least the width of the icon image.

Also, am already getting used to the zone selection method to highlight and expose the full names of the icons that are grouped close to one another.
