When running 'do-release-upgrade' I get the following return:

Could not determine the upgrade

An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade.

This can be caused by:
* Upgrading to a pre-release version of Trisquel
* Running the current pre-release version of Trisquel
* Unofficial software packages not provided by Trisquel

If none of this applies, then please report this bug using the

Any ideas of what the problem is, and a possible solution?

PS: I couldn't copy or even see the return from the terminal above what was visible in the window. That means, I couldn't scroll upwards to see earlier outputs. I wonder why?

Reading and thinking again, I suppose it is related to the ' Unofficial software packages not provided by Trisquel' part.

Does this mean that I have to uninstall any software installed via other PPA's (e.g. micahflee's PPA) or downloaded from other sites (e.g. https://sogo.nu/download.html#/frontends)?

I believe so. You can use 'ppa-purge' (in Trisquel's repository) and have more success that I did: https://trisquel.info/forum/trisquel-8-codename-flidas-release-candidate-ready-testing#comment-130971

Yes ask him to purge every nonfree PPA components thanks?
Parabola is also incompatible against AUR, A is stood for nonfree Arch, plus Parabola has own PCR, Parabola's community repo, if PCR is available in Trisquel I will be happy. Due to EFI-BIOS I can always install and run a diversity of 100% free systems like Parabola, PureOS, Devuan, Trisquel, https://hyperbola.info, https://FreeNIX.net.

Even with only free software, a PPA can raise issues when it comes to upgrading the distribution. That is, for instance the PPA that was problematic in my case: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-toolchain-r/+archive/ubuntu/test

I just had the same experience with a failure of "do-release-upgrade". I am very reluctant to change anything in my configuration, since I went to some lengths to make the machine in question into an audio server that passes all file formats unchanged to an external DtoA device.

I am able to run the system without the upgrade, but I noticed on the next startup that "apt-get update" is getting flidas files, and "apt-get dist-upgrade" suddenly reports

"2171 upgraded, 1009 newly installed, 137 to remove and 1 not upgraded."

So, it appears that I am in an intermediate state with package configuration files updated to flidas, but not the packages themselves.

I declined the upgrades for now. I hope that someone can provide more thorough advice regarding the steps to get back to an up-to-date consistent system, preferably without undoing any audio configuration.

Thanks,

Mike O'Donnell

If you save (e.g., on an external drive) the system configuration files (in /etc) you changed and the list of packages you installed (e.g., with the menu "File/Save Markings" of the "Synaptic Package Manager"), it should not be that time-consuming to configure a fresh install of Trisquel 8.

You should backup those files (as well as the user files) even if you do not go for a fresh install (e.g., if you try to fix the problems looking at the broken packages, removing them, etc.). Just in case.

I think that maybe your system was not upgraded and you're still using the same package versions, but your sources.list file (the one the system looks at to know where to get its packages) has been incorrectly switched to the Flidas one.

To check if this is the case, I would look at the contents of this file (you can do that easily on the terminal with sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list ) and if it's showing flidas entries, I would try to switch them back to belenos and running sudo apt-get update again. If it says that nothing or almost nothing is to be installed, you would be good to go (or at least still have a perfectly working Trisquel 7 install with your audio setup intact, just like it was before attempting the upgrade).

This could happen because in the process of dist-upgrading, this substitution is made at an early point; when something goes bad, this change should be undone, but maybe something went really, really bad and the rollback didn't work.

Anyway, please try that (if it doesn't work, you can just set those entries back to their current value) and tell us about the result.

Is there a simple and reliable way to back up to the previous 7.0 system? Something has happened to my audio buffering, probably due to the inconsistent system state, and it would be good to start with a known working state.

Well, as far as I understand, you do not run Trisquel 7 anymore. Like I wrote, you should save (e.g., on an external drive) the system configuration files (in /etc) you changed, the list of packages you installed (e.g., with the menu "File/Save Markings" of the "Synaptic Package Manager") and, of course, the user files (including the personal configuration). Only the user files really take space and justify the use of a backup system such as the one in the "System Settings" (or whatever it is called in MATE).

For backup up computer states for testing, I use Clonezilla. During my upgrade experience, I first backup my computers working state with "save disk" and when I screwed things up, I just did a "restore disk". Highly recommended.

Here is a screen by screen tutorial of the process that someone made. Beware the info is from 2011, but it seems at a glance to be more or less unchanged from what I did:

There is also a very puzzling message at

http://in.archive.trisquel.info/trisquel/dists/flidas/EOLReleaseAnnouncement.html

claiming that

"Trisquel GNU/Linux 8.0 'flidas' is NO LONGER SUPPORTED! "

This comes up in a search for information about the 8.0 upgrade, so perhaps this page is not supposed to be visible.
