In parabola, by just installing the set of packages for MATE and for evolution, I get an icon of evolution in the MATE panel which allows to show/hide the evolution window, changes aspect when there is new email and shows the number of new emails when moving the pointer over it.

On trisquel, when clicking on the time in the panel, I see the calendar events that I handle with evolution (I get it in parabola too) but I don't have the email icon. Is there a way to have that icon in the mate panel?

I guess that most people using trisquel use icedove but I find evolution easier to use and more reliable.

I found that what I have in parabola might come from an archlinux community package called evolution-on that only exists in archlinux. It works on MATE but also on XFCE and perhaps on more desktop environments. The package was built in 2020, the source code seems to have no change for more than 5 years, so there are some stable things even in parabola or archlinux :)

I don't know whether there is any equivalent feature in trisquel for MATE. As evolution is part of gnome, although I have been unable to configure gnome 3 to my taste so far (e.g. I can not avoid having empty space proportional to the font size below and above any piece of text, greatly reducing the amount of text that fits in the display, especially if one increases the font size), I will check what is feasible on trisquel with gnome 3, but in a virtual machine.
