My work place use MS's 'services' for everything. My work computer is a thin client which my work has full access to - hence I avoid to use it. I have a 'private' computer dedicated to work related stuff. I have a my work place's VMware virtual machine installed, but prefer not to use it. I can reach emails via imap but emails send via smtp will not be registered on my work's server, i.e. I can not see emails send from a 'private' system on my work system. Via e.g. lightning I can see when I am busy in my wok calendar, but not the activity and the location. This is rather inconvenient in many cases, and though I prefer using Thunderbird, I often 'have to' access my mail and calendar through firefox.

Does anyone here have an idea about how to circumvent such issue? I am sorry for the weak and blurry question, but my lack of knowledge constrains how I can ask.

You can try other software that supports Microsoft Exchange (I assume this is what you are referring to by Microsoft email services), such as Evolution with EWS (Exchange Web Services) plugin or DavMail.

Thanks.

I am not familiar with the Evolution and the mentioned plugins.

Do you think/know if these are similar to ExQuilla?

The Evolution Exchange Web Services plugin enables accessing Exchange features such as calendars and email messages in Evolution. You can view supported features here:
https://wiki.gnome.org/Apps/Evolution/EWS_OperationsFeaturesParityMatrix
DavMail converts the Exchange protocol into standard protocols so it can be accessed using your preferred email client. More info is available on the official website:
The main goal of DavMail is to provide standard compliant protocols in front of proprietary Exchange. This means LDAP for global address book, SMTP to send messages, IMAP to browse messages on the server in any folder, POP to retrieve inbox messages only, Caldav for calendar support and Carddav for personal contacts sync. Thus any standard compliant client can be used with Microsoft Exchange.
