Linphone and Jitsi both work well, although the xmpp servers at jit.si are no longer available.

There is a previous thread about this https://trisquel.info/en/forum/libre-alternative-skype

Jingle (video chat over XMPP) can do that. I think Jitsi Meet (which uses WebRTC IIRC) can do that, too.

Possibly https://ring.cx/

No first hand experience though but would seem to fit the bill.

I recommend Ring also!

They are the first to have interest in presenting it to a free
software-focused event (in this case, it was LibrePlanet 2016):

... By this I guess they do understand the difference between open
source, and free software (although, last time I checked, Ring's entry
on the Free Software Directory must yet be reviewed (and I'm trying to
help with this one too, as I also do occasional reviews when I have time
to)), see:

There is Firefox Hello too: already built in Abrowser. But it does not allow encryption like Jitsi.

seems like jitsi is logically what i was looking for. it uses the same backend tech as google hangouts.

UPDATE: This morning I installed a nightly build of jitsi and apparently it recommends google stuff, I found that odd, so I decided to check out the news page on jitsi and it seems they are in bed with atlassan and have change the license to be apache 2.

I didn't try, but I do see there is a jitsi in the trisquel repo. This is a reminder to look in the trisquel repos first.

Tox is the best alternative, it´s right what you need. you can chat through it and do videocalls (or only voice too) and it´s for most operating systems. Although form IM I personally recommend Kontalk (based on XMPP and OpenPGP), but is just for android and you cannot make groups or calls.

https://kontalk.org/

the good thing about both is their security
