A lot of progress was done this week. I started my summer vacation yesterday, and I'll be using all of it on intensive Trisquel hacking! I finished the first T8 kernel and with it and help from Aklis we now have Flidas build jails in our continuous integration server: http://jenkins.trisquel.info:8085/computer/

I started to build some of the helpers in order to get an installable system. So far it is not very user friendly, you have to debootstrap it manually and some core packages like grub are still missing, but it is just enough to even start playing around with the user interface, so here is a glimpse of what my faithful librebooted x60 is looking like right now:

That is mostly a teaser, it will take some more work until installing a desktop is a simple operation. But nevertheless some of the biggest milestones for the T8 Flidas release are now in place, the most important being that collaboration on the new release through our GitLab instance (https://devel.trisquel.info/trisquel/package-helpers) can now start.

We cannot thank you enough for this, Ruben. It's a pity the FSF
didn't give you eight free workdays in a row rather than sparsed one
every week.

The desktop looks very nice! Does anyone know if the final desktop is likely to be similar to the screenshot?

Thank you for another great update, Rubén! As promised I have donated $50 to the Trisquel project for this update. Who else will join me?

Even if you can't do $50 please consider setting some amount that you can afford and join in. Long live Trisquel!

Thanks to Rubin and all for the continued progress on the next release! What does the new desktop look like? Eager for version 8!

I believe (from the screenshot, in particular the file manager that is shown) that it is the MATE desktop environment 1.12 (the version in Ubuntu 16.04) with one single panel (extremely similar to that of Trisquel 7) at the bottom of the screen. Icons on the desktop are enabled.

The icons apparently are MATE's default (maybe with a different color scheme): http://mate-desktop.com/gallery/1.12/

However, the aesthetics will certainly evolve.

Mate 1.12 with a single panel works well with the latest orca screen reader.

I found 11 obsolete helpers in flidas that should be removed: https://trisquel.info/en/issues/20736

Apparently the firefox helper broke again, preventing Abrowser 48 from reaching the repos: http://jenkins.trisquel.info:8085/job/signed-binaries/4600/BUILDARCH=amd64/console

You should create an account on Trisquel's GitLab instance and send pull requests to update things.

I already have an account, I was just too lazy. I did it now: https://devel.trisquel.info/trisquel/package-helpers/merge_requests/155

Exciting GNUs! :-) Thank you for your work, Ruben and the team! Tehnoetic has just donated €21 to Trisquel.

10% of all sale profits of the Tehnoetic WiFi and BT adapter purchases are donated to a fully free distro at customer's choice (and Trisquel is default).

https://tehnoetic.com/adapters

So far, Tehnoetic has donated €80 to Trisquel, which is not much, but this is a small business, with not many orders.

Once again, thank GNU all for working on Trisquel, the distro I'm using myself and I recommend to novice GNU users because it's fully free and it's so easy to use!

What's the desktop environment?

It's got to be MATE. GNOME Flashback can't look that good. (Sad, but true.)

I was thinking the same thing. The panel transparency is too good. Personally, I was hoping for either XFCE or MATE. I like them both equally well. He has to move to something permanent, and flashback isn't. And it has to be something that doesn't demand compositing because Linux-libre doesn't support all video cards. I like the decision.

As soon as the alpha comes out, I'm installing it.

Will we be able to upgrade from Trisquel 7 to 8 without reinstalling? I know this may be a bit much to ask, but I think it would be a good idea. Is this in the plan?
