Hello,
Why the package gecko-mediaplayer is not present in Trisquel-Slaine? I
think it is completely free. Is it present in any other versions of
Trisquel? If not, what is the reason?
Thanks,
Aniyan
It has to do with how Trisquel is made. Trisquel is made from Ubuntu and Ubuntu has 4 repository components
1) Main - Officially supported software.
2) Restricted - Supported software that is not available under a completely free license.
3) Universe - Community maintained software, i.e. not officially supported software.
4) Multiverse - Software that is not free.
That package in ubuntu 11.10 which is the basic equivalent if Trisquel 5.5 has that package in the multiverse repository. I don't know why it is there (it appears to be GPL) but maybe there is some patent restriction or something. We don't import any packages from the multiverse repo because for whatever reason they are determined by the Ubuntu community to be non-free. Hope that answers your question.
I might add that in Ubuntu 12.04 (future Trisquel 6 release) it is moved to the universe component so this program might find its way into Trisquel at some point.
Yes, I understand that and I know about multiverse in ubuntu. But debian
lists that package in the free repository. I went through the license.
Seems to be ok.
I'm trying to do a streaming (.pls, .m3u, etc) using the online radio
stations. So gecko + mplayer is the only thing that works easily and
perfectly. I pulled out gecko from debian-squeeze. Is there any alternative
software in Trisquel-Slaine?
Thanks,
Jos Collin

I am just explaining why it is not in Trisquel. I am simply answering the question you asked in your original post as to why it isn't included. It may be in one of Debian's free repos but we don't get our repos from debian. We get them from Ubuntu and if Ubuntu does something different and puts it in a non-free repo then we simply won't get it.
Trisquel does not include a lot of free software simply as a bi-product of how it is made. You can see this if you look at the issue tracker you can see "please include package x" type issues. While Trisquel may be a fully free distro it certainly does not contain every free program out there in it's repos.
As far as the radio question you can use Exaile as it has a radio station feature (tabs on the left side).

I need a plugin that works with firefox. When the user access the radio
websites, the plugin should play the radio within the browser.
For example, www.somafm.com
Please suggest.
Thanks

Hi there,
Yes Soma Fm Groove Salad channel is my fav.
To be honest I just save-as to my desktop , and then play in VLC.
2 reasons for this : A, I always have the icon on my desktop to play when I start.
B, VLC provides a far better music visualisation effect (changeable !)
My 2 cents.
Warmest regArds,
JOshua.
