I have a fresh install of Trisquel 6.0.1 and I want to install GNOME 3. I got this from an old post (https://trisquel.info/en/forum/gnome-3-trisquel-6#comment-28627):

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gnome3-team/gnome3
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install gnome-session

and some instructions from here () ragarding PPA:

Before upgrading your system to a new Ubuntu release (i.e. from Ubuntu 13.04 to 13.10), you should probably run ppa-purge ppa:gnome3-team/gnome3 first.

*** You need to run 'sudo apt-get dist-upgrade' to avoid problems. ***
Please read the output before entering 'Y' to make sure important packages won't be removed.

What I do not understand is:

1) aptitude full-upgrade
2) install gnome 3 ppa and then gnome-session

or

1) install gnome 3 ppa and then gnome-session
2) aptitude full-upgrade

I would run an upgrade before installing anything, but it probably doesn't matter.

I installed "gnome-session" and "gnome-shell" from default repos and then did "aptitude full-upgrade" and rebooted and GNOME displays in GDM drop-down list too but on selecting it for login GDM says "can not launch gnome" .

So no luck with GNOME 3 in default repos :( . I will do tho PPA method.

Do you have 3-D acceleration? You need that for GNOME Shell 3.4. Otherwise, you'll have to until you upgrade to Trisquel 7 to use it.

Do I need 3D acceleration for GNOME Shell ?

What do I need to do ? I have onboard ATI card:

01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] RS880 [Radeon HD 4250]

Hardware acceleration of 3D graphics on that probably requires proprietary software.

Why do you suppose Trisquel doesn't include GNOME Shell? :)

It has gnome-shell package and I have installed it too and now I get te select in lightdm/gdm (GNOME, GNOME Classic,Xfce etc.) . Choosing GNOME Classic lands me to usual menu based gnome and choosing GNOME gives this message:

"Failed to launch gnome-session"

So, I can not run gnome-shell :(

Now all together:

Thank you ATI/AMD!

I ran this :-

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install gnome-shell

That's it.

If you check synaptic you will find a meta package 'gnome-shell'. This command installs it.

Legimet, I did an upgrade before installing gnome 3.10 in Trisquel 7 as you had said.
