GNOME Software

I installed GNOME software. Basically I can use it, for example to install a packet with a right click. However, GNOME Software does not display the catalog or the installed programs. Is there a special reason for this?

I've seen Add/Remove Applications and it's very good :-)

Yes, Add/Remove Applications is a great gift from the Trisquel gods. I find it to be the perfect complement to Synaptic and the Terminal for daily system management. Maybe that is the one feature I would miss the most if I had to find a replacement for Trisquel.

Not sure how much things might have changed since, but there used to be a software freedom problem related to GNOME Software:

There was a more recent thread on the same topic but I cannot find it. Anyway, I am sure you will probably soon forget about GNOME Software after you start using Add/Remove Applications instead.

I cannot say whether the problems still exist in Trisquel 9 (the referred issues were filed for Trisquel 7 and 8). Nevertheless, I can affirm that installing GNOME Software on Debian 11 does not pull any Snap dependency and that, as far as I know, GNOME Software proposes no proprietary software on Debian 11 with only the "main" area of the repository enabled. At least, taking a look in different categories, I have not seem names of proprietary programs I know (Skype, etc.).

I am not sure how I could miss that one, but here it is:

https://trisquel.info/en/forum/addremove-applications-alternative-trisquel-9

It says with graphic details that two years ago, when Trisquel 9 was still in the making, gnome-software had "issues, some minor, some major", so it was decided to fork gnome-app-install into trisquel-app-install ("Add/Remove Applications") instead. I see no reason to install gnome-software on top of Trisquel 9.

I saw it, but it didn't help me.

Ok, I see it's a longer story. But Add / Remove Applications works very well and you can do without GNOME software.

I never got why people feel Synaptic isn't good. The only thing it lacks is more information about the software. But other than that it always worked fine for me. And it certainly is quicker than GNOME software.

Hi Onsemeliot

Do you know how to install a downloaded .dep package with synaptic? I right clicked and then open with synaptic. Synaptic starts but then I can't find the .deb package.
